I have a 1 yr old male Shih Tzu. We had no issues housebreaking him. He's pretty smart, does all the normal tricks, etc...

We brought him to my mom's a month ago to stay with her for a couple of months. He loves it there! In fact, when he got out of the car, he knew where he was. We live in a small apt and she has a huge house with a yard. He spends a lot of time outside and absolutely loves it. They also have a cottage, which he loves even more cuz it's freedom. The issue with him is when my mom leaves him alone for a couple of hours, he'll poop in the house. He even did it at the cottage. My mom seems to think it's cuz he's upset that he's confined to the house or because we left him. He's never done this with us and he stays home alone all day while we're at work. I can't immagine he's doing it cuz he's upset. He loves it there and is clearly having a blast on his "vacation.

Any advice?

It's possible that the dog doesn't understand the new boundries. And at only one year old, it's still young.

I'd start crating him, if left alone, until they get the idea. You may have to catch them in the act a couple of times and give a good "No!", for them to actually understand that the old rules apply in the new house.

That's just my take on the problem. Maybe someone else has other insight.
