60 Dogs to be Killed at Medical College

http://www.themilwaukeechannel.com/video/10673391/index.html The Medical College of Wisconsin is about to use 60 innocent dogs in a 1st year student physiology course. The dogs are sedated, cut open, experimented on, then killed. The college is one of 2 in the country that still uses dogs...

Hi again, from Barley and I.

Hi all, It's been a long time since I've been on (2 months!). I quit a horrible soul-sapping job and now work at my local humane society and love my job, so I'll be on more. Pics below are Barley - he's a year now! And still photogenic. I hope these images aren't too big - I forgot how to...

Dog testing where I work! Help!

(I need all the help I can get, so I'm selfishly posting this in the Fire Hydrant forum too) Hi all. I've been absent for a while. I started a new job, and it's been nutty. I'm finally well-paid, and the benefits are amazing, and I like it. Not in love with it, but like it. Here's the...

Please help my conscience! Dog testing.

Hi all. I've been absent for a while. I started a new job, and it's been nutty. I'm finally well-paid, and the benefits are amazing, and I like it. Not in love with it, but like it. Here's the problem: I just found out that they experiment on dogs. Not only do they do surgeries on...

    Separation Anxiety - MINE!!!!

Just have to get this out there.... I'm starting a new 9-5 job next Monday, and I've been in grad school for the past two years, which means a totally different schedule. I'm going to miss Barley soooo much!!! He follows me around everywhere, sits outside the bathroom door while I shower...

    Changing behavior - timid?

Not sure if this is adult behavior emerging, a phase, or what. Barley used to be exceptionally friendly with strangers. He'd let anyone pet him, and got all wiggly-butt when someone approached. Just in the last week or so, this has changed. No unusual incidents that would be causal...

    Rotten Children (vent)

Why the hell don't parents teach their children right from wrong??? I was walking Barley, and as we came near our house, I saw a kid holding a pregnant stray cat that's been hanging around... I thought she was the neighbor's, but apparently not. Anyway, it kind of looked suspicious, so...

    Flouride treatment and tooth $$$?

So Barley has a double tooth, and the vet recommended pulling the baby tooth b/4 it gets infected. She wants to give him anesthesia to pull it, and the charge would be $110-$130. Also, she said they could give him a flouride treatment to help the enamel in the future.... is it worth it...

    Hotel Recommendations? San Francisco...

My husband and I are going to SF in August, and it's my first trip there. Work is covering air/hotel (hooray!), but I don't want to stay at the hotel where my conference is, which is the Marriott on 4th/Market. I want to stay close by, however... any recommendations? I like historic hotels...

    He's enormous! (pics!)

I think Barley grew five inches this week. He grows so fast - I can barely pick him up anymore! He's darker overall and more golden-esque than chow now, too. (he bit off a head of a poppy after I snapped this) He lost the dark fur along his spine, but it's still on his tail: He...

Why won't he get tired out?

Ok. So Barley is now 6 months, and I don't understand where his energy comes from. He is constantly wanting to play/walk/train... he never naps during the day. I'm home full-time right now, so this is what we've been doing: 1 hr walk in morning 1 hr walk in evening 2-4 hours...

    Barley meets Timber (pics!) Help!

So Barley met Timber this week, and Timber was a little scared of Barley. I'm not sure what to do about this: Barley is now 6 months, and nips a lot at dogs, even puppies. I think he's herding, but it scares other owners who stupidly think my dog is attacking their dog (at the dog park, or...

Picked up New Puppy today! (pics)

This is Timber, my father's new german shepherd. We picked him up from the breeder's today, and he cried like a monkey the majority of the ride home, but settled into his new house really well (plus, he didn't pee on me in the car, so that's a bonus!) He's 7 1/2 weeks old, and my father is...

How can I get SAP out!????!

Barley rolled in sap from a pine tree, and he's all sticky and icky. Any good tips to get it out? I feel like I should find a Heloise website.... :D

does your dog talk in his sleep?

Tonight Barley's sleep has been really active - he sounds like a human laughing, and I'm wondering... is he dreaming of squirrels or having a nightmare? No barks, but that sleep-talk dogs do. Anyone know of any studies on it? Do your dogs sleep-talk too?

    Barley Swims! *pics*

Hooray! :D Barley finally braved the cold river this weekend. I was so proud. We took him to see my brother's dog, George, a competitive dog-diving lab. I think Barley got jealous and finally pounced in to retrieve George's stick! I'm An Alligator George Leaps I Can Swim, too, Mom!

    For Melanie!!!

(for some reason it's not letting me reply or send PM... sorry everyone else) Thanks, Melanie. It's reassuring to know that I'm not just a terrible trainer. I think we'll start working with the 20' rope today. My goal is 90% recall by the end of the month. Now, if only I could get him to...

    Pictures of my neglected oso...

Ok, he's really not neglected. Well, maybe by the camera. But since having a puppy around, he's not the sole center of attention anymore, which must be difficult (he's still the only furry creature allowed in bed, though). So today Oso demanded due consideration when it came to posting pics...
