    Shock collars

Ok, I'm really glad for all the response and education I've gotten from this post. I've learned quite a bit about shock collars. I've checked out your posts that were for and against it and even the links you guys posted - so tks :) What strikes me in all this is the following: The shock...

    Shock collars

Thank you all for your advice. I will do much more research before making a decision. My dogs are 10 months old and weigh 30 lbs -- the vet still refers to them as pups so that's why I opted the puppy forum for this topic. The issues I'm having trouble with are running off to chase cars...

    Shock collars

Hey guys, I was talking with a co-worker the other day about my doggies and he mentioned using a shock collar in training. He said they really work wonders. My questions are: will this injure my dog? Are these relatively safe to use? Thanks!!

    Running away....

Ok, let's see -- they are a black lab/jack russell mix. They are currently not neutered, but will be within the next month or so. Everything I read/heard said to train them on-leash so that's what I've done. Only recently have I begun to take them off and let them roam in the house. So far...

    Running away....

Hello again guys, ok I have a new problem. My dogs are now over 7 months old. Both male and super dogs. I've managed to train them on several commands: come, sit, down, outside, even stay (but this one is still in progress) among others. My problem is that at the first available moment...

    Urgent help needed....

Doberluv -- no worries :) I understand exactly. Also, I really worked with him over the weekend and can already tell a difference. You guys have really been helpful -- thanks! I really thought filing his nails was a good idea and I will start that as well. Thanks again

    Urgent help needed....

Thanks Doberluv -- I understand. I'll just try harder with him. And don't worry - I've never shouted or been rough with him (other than pushing his rear down). I really hope with just more attention and reinforcement this will do it - my husband has about had it with him. He really is a...

    Urgent help needed....

I just saw your reply Tami -- thanks as well. I've tried that and he will literally jump all over your backside. This sounds funny, but he really causes some pain. My husband has some pretty nasty scratches to prove it. Not to mention the ones on me.... Thanks anyway :)

    Urgent help needed....

Thanks Dizzy -- I'll give anthing a try!! To answer your question: He jumps no matter where we are, but it's particularly bad in the house. I don't really understand why he does this. I've never encouraged this behavior. He's a really great dog otherwise. Thanks again..

    Urgent help needed....

I'm having a real problem with one of my dogs jumping on people. He's leaving scratches, bruises and even bloody places. He's not selective who he jumps on - what if he were to jump on a child?! This hasn't happened yet, but I'm worried. I've tried everything but spanking him. Everything...

    Your opinions...

I have a feeling we're in for quite a struggle. I really think he can overcome this, but it will take alot of work & time. Thanks for all the input :)

    Your opinions...

Tried the treat method - they take the treat and run back. To answer aelizilly's question -- not a whole lot with other dogs, but a fair amount with different people. Would it be appropriate to actually make the dog sit and be petted? I don't want a fight with them or make them afraid...

    Your opinions...

What are some opinions/techniques that you all have on how to handle a dog that won't let people pet it? When I take them for a walk and someone approaches to pet them then they act like they're going up to sit and be petted and just when the person gets within reach they duck away and run...

    Using crate.....

I read here in one of the sticky's that dogs aren't physically able to 'hold it', when needing to go to the bathroom, until around 4 months old. Mine are now 4 1/2 and are still continuing to urinate in their crates. So far there have been no accidents in the house and they are very good about...

    Training....

What are some of your techniques for training a pup/dog to 'stay'? I've been reading online, but there are several different opinions and I would like to see what some yours are as well please. Thanks!

    Invisible fences....

What do you guys think about invisible fences for dogs/puppies? The kind that operates via a collar and gives a mild shock to the animal if it strays too far. Is this abusing the animal or harmful to it in any way other than the mild shock? Would it traumatize it? Please advise as soon as...

    Fighting question....

Ok guys, here I am again with a new situation. As most of you know, I have 2 pups, a little over 3 months old, both male, and are a Black Lab/Jack Russel mix. Let me give a little back info and then on to the problem. I have always trained them seperately and they each have their own crate...

    Hyper puppy -- Help!

Alright guys, solid advice. I'll just suck it up and stay longer outside with him  They're really wonderful most of the time! It's just a few choice moments or behaviors that seem to snag them/me. The mum actually had 6 pups in the litter! Unfortunately, I couldn't take them...
