    open work

Dear IliamasQuest, thank you so much for your reply. i have a feeling that you are right about being de-motivated at a trial. she is a quiet little dog. so much that i must handle her with care and not yell at her, as this tends to make her 'go to pieces'. i am going to try playing with...

    open work

my border collie seems to lack stamina while in the ring. i get the impression that she has 'turned off' even before she goes in for the trial. as for when she is just training, she is an angel and does everything i ask of her. in the trial, her off lead heel work is lagging, and doesn't want...

    obedience training - retired dog????

Hi everyone. Please, can someone help me. Nara, my border collie (3 yrs), has done well and has obtained her novice title. I have been training her for open work, and she now knows all the work. However, I now feel that she has almost 'retired' herself. She gives me the impression that...

    My so-called "boistrous" Australian Kelpie

Rusty, my kelpie, is such a playful, boistrous little girl, but as you can see, she can also be an angel.

    over protection

Hi, I need some advice on a border collie (approx 12 months of age), who has become very protective of its owner (a young lady, recently married, about 20 years old). It seems that whenever another dog gets too close to the owner, the border becomes quite nasty. Has anyone any ideas how to...

    controlled urination

Is anyone able to help with this problem? One dog is 4 years old (bitch, not desexed) and one 20 month old bitch, also not desexed. They have always played together, and still do. However, for the last seven to ten days, the owner has noted that after they have finished eating their dinner...

    wide heelwork off lead

Hi, Thanks again for your replies (which I will try). Thanks again for your reply Mordy. I will try to get the book and learn from it. I learn't the clicker from the 'net', as its not widely used in Australia. I find it a delight to train my dog, and wish more people would use this method...

    wide heelwork off lead

reply to heelwork Thank you for your reply. I have trained Nara with the clicker, but can't get her to look at me without using the clicker. This seems to be the only way I can get her attention (which I know is incorrect).

    wide heelwork off lead

I have a three year old border collie, who is now learning 'open' work. Her heel work was fantastic on lead, but I find that now her off lead heel work is getting further and further away from me. She is quite a nervous dog, and wonder if this is the cause. She used to watch me, but not now...

    Out of sight Sit Stay

I have a border collie who is coming along well with her Open work. Although her "out of sight sit stay" was very steady, she is now going down two or three times at this exercise. I don't know why. Have tried varying times, not doing a "out of sight down stay", etc. but no success. Any ideas?

    dumbell work

Thank you all for your quick replies. Why didn't I think of that??? Have been an instructor for many years, and didn't go to the obvious (how very stupid of me.) I will endeavour to put her back on the lead. Many thanks to you all. Elsie

    dumbell work

I'm not sure if this note has already got to you, so forgive me if it has been duplicated. Two and half year old border collie, loves retrieving her dumbell. However, will not "stay" when commanded. Always leaves handler's side before being sent. Any idea's how to make her stay before being...

Comment by 'Elsie' in media 'Nara - my border collie'

Thank you so much for your comment regarding Nara. I think she is so very special. The bi-eyed Collies are pretty (and to think nobody wanted her when she was a pup). I love her dearly. Whenever I ask her to do something, she is so willing to oblige. Thanks Elsie
