    How long to ignore?

One suggestion-- greatly increase the number of appropriate chew items and pick stuff up around the house so that you greatly decrease the number of inappropriate chew items. If chewing is more of a problem in some areas of the house than others, limit access until she learns the rules and...

Puppy whining in pen, ignore or satisfy need?

Make sure all her needs have been met, then let her whine. It's hard, but it works. She'll realize that the whining doesn't get her anything and it will decrease. HOWEVER, you have to make sure you always ignore it while you are trying to get rid of the behavior. If you sometimes ignore it...

    Woot-Tonight was a First!

very cool! Sounds like a big accomplishment for you. When we got Ginger 5 years ago, at that point, I didn't know a thing about training. The trainer we used suggested a prong collar. Which we used for awhile. :( We switched later to a front clip harness, which I much prefer. She hated that...

New here. I'm owned by a crazy Brittany spaniel

VERY active! She gets a 3 mile walk in the morning and a 1 mile walk in the evening. Usually a bit of training either in the morning or afternoon. Spends most of the afternoon watching/chasing squirrels in the backyard. Here are a couple of cute puppy pictures. :)

New here. I'm owned by a crazy Brittany spaniel

I'll stick around, I'm not a spammer. :) I'm very active on a couple of equestrian forums, but have been needing a place to talk to other dog folks. Just found this board, and it seems like a good one. Also, storming heavily in TX today, so I'm miserable and stuck inside. Usually spend...

I'm new to the forum, just joined. However, I wanted to share the link to my blog. I am a graduate student studying animal behavior and training. I blog about the many horses I work with, as well as stories about my dog. I love clicker training and positive training methods! Stale...

What is the point of clicker training?

clicker training does take a bit of practice at first. However, like everyone else has said, once you get the hang of it, it makes it really a lot easier to teach behaviors. I actually just posted an article this morning on my blog of 10 tips for improving your clicker training: 10...

Advice on how to train out of control 10 month old rescue

Sue Ailsby's level's program is a great place to start for basic training ideas: Levels.html As Maxy24 suggested, Kikopup's videos are great as well. Do you have a vet appointment scheduled to get him a basic check up and shots? If not, I'd do that ASAP. Also, I'd start looking into...

Advice on Bamm around miniature horses

I would recommend not doing this with dogs and horses. You're probably better off containing the dog (tying, kenneling, etc.) or teaching him to ignore the horses. I would also make sure you have a REALLY good recall if you are going to have any dog loose around horses. Some horses...

    at my wits end

Front clip harnesses work GREAT! Also, start in an environment that is free of distractions and easy for him to succeed. (The living room, back yard, etc.) and gradually work up to requiring him to walk on a loose leash in more distracting environments. Check out this tutorial on Sue...

Updated Version of Clicker Training 101

Really well written article, Kayla. You do a good job outlining all of the important basics in a straight forward, easy to understand manner. I would add to this that with practice, many people can become pretty proficient at making a "click" sound with their mouth. Not a cluck sound, but an...
