I know we've had several threads on Photography and cameras in particular - BUT there were a lot of us that received cameras for Christmas. I am curious as to what cameras everyone uses now (lenses, etc).

Also, you amazing photographers out there, where did you learn to take such beautiful pictures? I am new to photography and am trying to absorb as much information as possible and gather resources to improve my photo taking abilities.

I got a Nikon D40 for Christmas with the kit AF-S 18-55mm lens.

We have a D70s and a D40, with an 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 (what you have), 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5, 50mm f/1.8, 28-200mm f/3.5-5.6, and a 55-200mm f/4-5.6 VR.

Guess I should add that the 50mm f/1.8 is my favorite. It's been almost permanently attached to the D40 since Christmas.

This month I will be buying a Nikon D80...and it will rock my world. I am incredibly excited and looking forward to it immensely. Missing action shots and bad indoor shots will be a thing of the past...FOREVAH!

Yeah. I already have a kodak easy share that works great for just taking cute pics but I was wanting something I could do a little more with. I have been paying attention to what everyone says they use for there amazing pics and I'd love to be able to take them.

What kills me is I let the bf pick out the expensive garmin he wanted but I had no say in the camera. I think I am going to give my easy share to my brother and use this one for a while. I don't have time to take pics anyway:p All I have used lately is my cell phone anyway:lol-sign:

I got the Nikon D40 for my b-day in September (I combined my money with relatives, etc.). I still use the kit lens, but I'm looking into that 55-200 mm VR one.

I'm a complete amateur, and this camera is great for beginner d-SLR users like me.

You know better than that . . . I've still got my old Nikon 5005 35mm - several lenses . . . I forget which, to tell the truth, I just put 'em on and use 'em. I do know one's a 70-200mm and I believe another is a 28-200mm, then there are three more - two more Nikkor lenses for close up and medium shots and a Tamron I got for more depth of field and speed to take wrestling photos. In some ways the filters are more interesting than lenses though.

You would be suprised at what fantastic pictures you can get with a basic camera.

It's more than having a fancy lens (though obviously good quality helps), it's about knowing what makes a good shot, and timing, and finding good light etc etc

The more fancy the camera, the harder it is to get GOOD pictures, because you have to fiddle with tons of settings etc.

I have never even bothered to try and play with the DSLR (not only because I am not up to that standard yet, but it also cost about £2000 and I somehow don't trust myself with it ;) ) - will work up to it though, hopefully this time next year ;)

I have a Nikon D70 with 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5, 70-300mm f/4-5.6 and 50mm f/1.2 lenses. The 70-300 is the lens that's almost permanently attached to my camera and I have my eyes on the 18-200 VR lens next.

My dad has a D200 that I use occasionally, but as weird as it sounds I like my D70 better. I'm more comfortable with it and aside from the difference in MPs and more flexibility in some areas (greater ISO control, faster shutter speed, better viewfinder etc.) on the D200, I don't notice much of a difference in image quality. *shrug*

And I have two old Canons with 50mm lenses. I don't know what kind they are, don't know the specifics on the lenses either. I don't do film photography anymore because I don't have my own darkroom and developing film is really damned expensive.

I have a Nikon D50 with Tamron 28-80mm lens f/3.5-5.6 (I'm still not sure what that means), a 75-300 mm f/4.9-inf. and a Merkury 55mm macro lens, with three filters.

I just started taking LOTS and LOTS of pictures and playing with settings and looking at the photographs on here for ideas on angles and light play and stuff. I just finally realized that my camera can get a setting as high as 1/4000...which is fantastic for taking sunny pictures of snow at high altitudes while driving ;)

EDIT: I want that 18-200mm lens soooo badly....

So the numbers (70-300mm for example), tell how much the lens "zooms" correct?? So, if I wanted a good zoom lens, what should I look for (one that gives the most clarity, sharpness, etc.)

smkie.... if it makes you feel better, I've got a 30 year old Canon AE-1 Program that I use as my film camera. If that's not a dinosaur, I dont' know what is!

For Christmas I got lots of camera goodies... lens hoods for my kit lens and my 70-300 ES lens, polarized lens filters for both lenses, plus a new camera bag.. wheee!
