Just shaved my dog. Is he too thin? I am feeding 3/4 cup (8oz cup) per day, more than the recommended amount writtien on the package of innova puppy. He is 2.5kg and 7mo old.

I also noted that his personality changed after the shaving. Become quite separated from me. He also becomes much faster to catch!!! Much difference!!!

That is one naked dog!!! May I ask why you took him down to the skin??

And yes, he does look a bit too thin. Add 1/4 cup to his diet and see what happens.

Ummm, your dog is a poodle right? What's up with the hair still on his face and body? How did you get so close to the skin?

IMO, he does look a bit on the skinny side.

What in the name of all things holy did you shave him with??

He looks thin to me, I'd feed him a bit more or increase the fat content in his diet. Granted, he's 7 months old and at 7 months my Papillon looked positively emaciated so perhaps it's just the way he's growing. I'd still feed more though. lol

Poor dude :(. Why'd you shave to the skin?

Ya, he could probably put on a little weight, LOL.

hes definatly on the thin side, add some food with a hihger fat content, you should be able to feel the hip bones but NOT see them, with the rib cage again you should be able to feel them but at its thinnest realy should only be bale to see the last 2 ribs (and thats on a deep chested thinner breed) on a small poodle i wouldnt want to see the ribs at all.

i too am curious as to why you shaved him down to the skin?! make sure if he goes outside for even a few minutes he gets sunscreen!

Something's not right here.........................................

Why in the hell would you shave your dog down to the skin like that? Honestly, I'm starting to wonder whether or not it's to get a rise out of people on the forum.

And I feel so sorry for your dog.

I can't help but keep coming back and looking at his picture. :( I don't know what to say. What on earth blade did you use on him? None of my blades shaves down to the skin like that.

I'm speechless and close to tears. Please if it's because you need help with grooming message me and I'd be glad to help.

I hope you didn't use any type of hair removal on him. I don't know why I keep thinking that, it's just the way the fur is totally bald in some areas in which it would be so difficult to shave so close without cutting his skin.

I think the cut was some sort of mistake, maybe? She's been around a while and make numerous posts about grooming her poodle. I'm thinking this new shaved look is a result from this thread http://www.chazhound.com/forums/showthread.php?t=52020 judging by her comment
very nice cut. If you don't mind, i will keep this photo and try to DIY on my toy later
.

Who knows..

In any case, I agree that the dog is a little thin.

The only thing I can think of that would shave that close is a #40 blade, but a 40 wouldn't leave all those little hunks of hair. I hope the dog doesn't have clipper burn because of that.

I really hope you didn't try to use an actual razor on your dog. =/

ETA: Miakoda, I don't think so . . . I think this was an honest attempt to groom a dog. o_O

The pup does look a bit thin and the cut was too close. I'd make sure to put sunblock on the pup if you bring him outside,a nd that's everytime you go out bare skin could burn easily. Also put some kind of lotion that soothes the skin just in case it's a bit irritated.

Dear all

all the replies are out of my expect and make me feel VERY guilty :(

First of all, it was a serious attempt to groom my dog.

Reason: it is quite hot here and there is a common belief here that the hair of a poodle will grow more densely and curly after shaving.

I shave it using a clipper like this:

It comes with a 3mm comb. I tried to use it, but I cannot shave it after putting it on.

May I know what are the key concerns of shaving down? Why are you so worried?

I noted my dog shakes his head quite alot after shaving!! Maybe it is irrigated. I have just put some lotionon his skin

Sorry for making everyone feel bad here. I will sure put some sunscreen on him and take extra care of him until his hair grow out again.

I promise I will not do it again. SORRY for my stupid mistake (say to my dog)

It could really irritate his skin, and shaving that close it's easily to cut his skin. That plus sunburn (especially with it being so hot there) is a really BIG concern! If you even go outside for a second make sure you put plenty of sunblock on him! :)

I don't know if you have any aloe vera or some lotion made to soothe skin when irritated? THat might help if you have any or can get some :) Just don't do it again! ;) The attachments will probably be needed next tim just so you don't shave it too close. Maybe you can post in the grooming section to get more help with proper goorming techniques :)

Tony,

The concern with shaving so close is not only the fact that it doesn't look great, but it can really hurt his skin if you clip too close. Some dogs have more sensitive skin and are more prone to clipper burn but any dog can get it if you shave carelessly or too close.

Your dog's hair will grow back (ah the joy of Poodles) but in the meantime, when you use those snap-on combs, you need to make sure your dog's hair has been blow-dried and is completely tangle-free or it won't work.

He could be shaking his head because he has hair in his ears, or his head just feels strange now that it's bald. I'd clean his ears and give him a day or two to adjust to the new haircut. If he's still shaking his head I would call a vet.

No need to feel bad, it was a mistake and your dog shouldn't be permanently hurt by this. Just keep sunscreen on him (and maybe a vest or something) and once his hair grows out again, take him to a professional groomer. If you can't get to a groomer, ask for advice on this forum! Giny has toy poodles and could help you a lot.
