Pitbulliest's thread about evaluating shelter/rescue dogs got me thinking on a different tack. How many dogs (that have homes already) do you know that would never pass an evaluation if they for some reason ended up in the shelter system?

I know of quite a few...my boots have teethmarks from a couple (food/cage aggression) and my right middle finger has a scar from another (just a *&$^& of a Lhasa).

As far as Sawyer goes, he could be adopted out without hesitation.

What a scarey thought. I have often thought of what would become of my pets if I were to be hit by a bus. I made arrangements in my will with a nearby animal sanctuary to see to their adoptions and needs are met. In this way, I don't burden anyone with their responsibility. I have friends and relatives who have said they would take my pets, but you never know someone's situation if the Day arrives. To me, this is insurance for my beloved pets.

Of course, I suppose I could have someone come here to Chaz and auction off Tosca. lol.

Well, I think Hershey could be adopted out, but then again, he has a little tiny aggression on his collar, that could easily be fixed. I think just because he is friendly, and all that stuff, he would be adopted in a heartbeat. I think...

My dogs that could:
Marq
Cocoa
Summer
Fudge
Pepper(though she does have ulcer problems, but only rarely flare)

Dogs that have something that would probably hold them back from being adopted:

Misha(can be dog aggressive)
Brownie(Can be dog aggressive and blind in one eye)
Ginger(both blind and deaf)
Dogy(completely blind)

Spider would be adopted out 100%. Loves children, other dogs, ect.

Naughty would prolly be too, if the right person came along. She is very reserve and not overly friendly, but NEVER aggressive.

Kodak would def. not make it out of the shelter. She has some fear issues that we are working on.

Shooter would be like Spider, def. a great dog to adopt out, and she SCREAMS therapy dog potential

Pearl , well hello, how could you resist the puppy face? LOL

But thankfully I will never ever have to know for sure.

Dakota could be adopted out with ease. There really aren't any problems with him, aside from the fact that he barks out of excitement.

Eve, of course. She'd be terrified in a shelter but she has such a sweet disposition, I can't imagine her failing anything.

Ripley... to an adult-only home, if at all. He does not tolerate strangers touching his feet, resource guards and is aggressive to dogs that invade his space. But, the fact that he's small would probably excuse all that. Small dogs don't last more than a day or two at our shelter, and purebreds go twice as fast.

Major could, only have a few barking problems

Lizzie, I am not sure of. I know she could, the only think that would be stopping her is food aggression with only some dogs....I think that would stop her, but it depends on the dog they use :lol-sign: It's wierd because she only has it with certain dogs. And she'd be scared to DEATH in a shelter in a cage, so that would effect it alot too.

But, honestly I can't say yes because I would never want that to happen and I don't think she would trust any one like she does me. I am the *only* one that can do some things to her (like trim nails, clean ears)

Temperament wise Skye could - no question. I would take the Presa, Elfa two doors down in a heartbeat, she is such a sweetheart but the two behind me - beautiful as they are they are reactive and bad with cats, kids and each other.

Gus could be no questions asked.. As long as it was to someone active, who liked the outdoors, and not easily manipulated! ;)

Perle would have to go to a childless family.. She has an irrational hatred of children.

Hmmm, Daisy might be iffy, because she has some fear issues we are working on, although she is house trained, has basic house manners and knows basic commands, and gets along with dogs and cats. But she is a shy big black dog, which would make it difficult.

Benji, who is small and cute, could be adopted without problems. He gets along with other dogs, but would need to go to a home without cats since he has a very high prey drive. I would probably also reccomend a home without small children for both dogs, as Daisy is fearful and Benji hasn't had any experience with kids (that we know of) and he has issues with certain parts of his body being touched, so yeah, no kids for him.

UMMM, My Caiza wouldn't make it out of a shelter IMO  As wonderful as he is with us and most strangers outside of my home,ACD's are one of those breeds (suspicious of strangers) that have a hard time adjusting when going from one home to another. I think he would be very fearful being in a new enviroment with strangers he doesn't know. Luckily, it would never happen for him to EVER leave me :) !

How many of your dogs would make it out of a breed specific rescue that was familiar with their quirks?

Meg could live with pretty much anyone, no problem. Great with all people, zero resource guarding, nice house manners. Although she is accustomed to a very active lifestyle, I think she would settle into a quieter life fairly easily. I think a shelter/rescue who did decent temperment testing would probably place her in a "single dog, or possibly a male dog" home only, although her dog issues are pretty managable.

Kahlua would make it. Unfortunately Whiskey would get the needle. He is not very social and is very aggressive. I guess that is my doing on top of his breed but when he is with me he can be as social as I want him to be which is not much. He is great around ones I want him to be and if I show I want him to be the other way he is. I did that because I wanted a dog for my safety Shooting people is a bit too messy lol.

I don't think Max would have. He has growled at people who try to hug him (which is weird since he grew up with kids) but it was only with strangers. Then there is the fact that he HATES to be lifted up. His feet were some what touchy but he would not get aggressive about that he would just run away when you handled them too much and he was a little dog aggressive although has never bit one. I still loved him!

Maxy, would you like to have another dog, if Max were to send one to you? I think you seem to be a really great dog-mom.

Zoom, I really do think Tosca would make it out of breed rescue. She really is good with people, cats, other dogs, kids and aardvarks. I don't think she would be happy in a home without other animals though. I think she would be lonely. She whines when the cats aren't around her or hiding out. She is a bit of a diva though, so she wouldn't do well where she got no attention.

I think all of mine would. Nikki would probably be sent to an adult only home as she has food agression issues. She's not horribly agressive, but if a kid was to keep trying to take her food, she'd begin to have issues. I do worry about the older two having medical issues. However, neither one has anything seriously wrong with them but they're old and arthritic and would need special attention. Trey is also extremely shy and might have some issues there.

Both the paps would get adopted out no problem. Neither have any aggression or shyness issues at all. But they'd never be adopted out because if something were to happen to me and all my family, they go back to their breeder.

Well, seeing as I got Baxter from a shelter not quite a year ago, I would say he would get adopted out. Traveler --she is an old girl, but that is her only fault. She is a wonderful dog--great with kids, cats, dogs, just about anyone!
