Oh my gosh. Reading horse forums and the stupid things people do around horses. Like intentionally spooking someone's horse.

WHY? Do you want the rider to end up in the hospital?!

Also, I miss riding so so so much. I even miss Charlie.

Jerkface :p

And I'm so sad that I don't get to see him this Christmas (I haven't been out to the farm all year). My grandparents gave him away to one of my cousin's friends. He was the only horse they had left after Stormy died and they gave away my Arabian, Tulip (which was my dream horse- a beautiful bay Arabian. They didn't even tell me they gave her away, I went out to the pasture that Christmas and she was just gone) that I really rode- he was more my level and speed, he was bombproof. Minus water, lol.

Sadness. I want a horse so badly. I'd love a Tulip and Charlie all wrapped up into one horse. Ever since I found out we're going out to the farm for x-mas, it just struck me how much I miss horses and riding. Even though I keep trying to tell myself I don't like them at all because of all the pain being around horses has caused me, I really do miss it.

And I love Charlie. I really wish I could see both him and Tulip.

You never know, you might end up in a place in college where you can have a dog. : ) I always said I wouldn't have a dog until after college, but honestly, I had the time and money for one my junior year. Unfortunately, I had signed a lease on a no-pets apartment, so I got Hugo my senior year. You might just find that you have the time and money during college :)
While it *is* possible, I just can't see it happening. I have no plans to get a dog while attending college, because of so many circumstances. But, you never know!

For those of you that do have [or had] dogs in college; How'd you manage that?

I agree, I can't wait until you get a dog, I know your depression will greatly improve when you do :)
I do think getting a dog could significantly help my Depression, comfort-wise,& exercise wise. I have no motivation to exercise, but... having a dog makes my motivation go up 200% percent. Even at that, I wouldn't get a dog just for that reason.

Boyfriend's brother just backed out of pet-sitting while we're out of state for the holidays. And his mom is telling us essentially that we shouldn't rely on him for petsitting... Well ok then, we just won't ask you (he lives with his parents currently, so both of them) for help anymore.

I'm peeved, Boyfriend is pissed. Blah.

I got my first dog as soon as I left the dorms, junior year. It went poorly at first, and she went back to the farm to her kennel. I picked her up again over spring break and spent a week with her. Best dog I've ever had. I kept.. collecting them after that ;) lol I just made sure I was home whenever I could be home, and had roommates that liked dogs. I did a lot with them in terms of walking them on campus and going to the nearby dog park, plus I went to penn state in the middle of nowhere so we did a lot of hiking and hunting and training classes (we lucked out with the dog club 20mins away); also I was a little sister at a fraternity so they were there a lot. I don't know, I just made it work. Did it cut out a part of my social scene? Sure - but that wasn't a social scene I was that interested in I guess. I'd rather down bottles of wine with close friends and our dogs than go out to the bars all night.

I hate waking up super early, especially when I know I'm going to have to work 6a-7p with one of the most unpleasant people ever.

I just wanna shrink Roxie and keep her in my pocket :(

I moved to college with a one year old intact male GSD. Rented a condo off campus with my boyfriend. Had loan money to help cover expenses and had two part time jobs. I did pay a pet deposit of $250... We ended up getting a bottle baby kitten and second dog as well.

Nothing was really troublesome... If you're comitted to taking care of a pet, I don't know why it's a bad idea to get them just because you're in school? Other people spend the same amount of time at work every day instead. I was still able to do training classes and spend time with him at the park, etc.

I purchased Abrams after graduation, but I had wanted to get a pup my Junior year. College schedules are actually REALLY nice when it comes to having a dog, especially once you hit your last two years. You can either get your classes scheduled so you're only attending morning or afternoon classes, or have breaks throughout the day that you can swing back home for potty breaks/play time. My senior year I had my own apartment, was working full time, and going to school part time...would have been a perfect time to have a dog, but Michael (who was then my boyfriend) said it would be best to wait for his sanity, so I did.

Michael had Cynder all through college. He was in a dorm his freshman year and his mom kept Cynder, but after that he moved out into a house with roommates and had Cynder with him. Granted, she is like the perfect college-student dog, but he and she got along just fine.

My friend, Michael's roommate, had two dogs and a cat throughout her entire college life, too. Both Michael and my friend worked part time jobs to help cover expenses (student aid helped with the rest) and they both found the time for their dogs/classes/jobs/social life. It isn't as hard to do as you'd think it is, especially if you have a good dog. :p

Hear, hear. I really had no interest in it for a while after Tristan died, and my rational mind still knows it isn't an option. Financially I can not have another horse now. I like not feeling sheer panic every time I try to get money out of an ATM, or wondering if I should pay the cell phone bill or the credit card bill this month.

But good lord I am having horse-want right now. I go online and look at sale ads weekly, then remember reality and stop. For a week.

Honestly, it was a great decision for me. I really thought I would wait until I graduated, but I realized that was just an arbitrary deadline I was giving myself years and years ago to make me feel like I at least had a date to look forward to. I never spent more than 8-9 a day in class/at work so it was like having a full time job and having a dog. I did have homework and what not but it was still pretty easy to manage.

I literally graduated college yesterday and if I could go back in time- I would have gotten a dog even earlier.

Basically? It's due to from what I've been told in the past. The majority of people have told me that it'd be better to wait, then to have a dog in college. Because Time. Money. Space.

Even now? I do feel like I would not be financially stable enough to raise a dog.

I have no problem with waiting. In fact, it'll will give me more to figure out breed is compatible with me/my lifestyle.

Why? Simply because they are too much work. They also believe I wouldn't commit my time to taking care of a dog training, feeding, grooming, exercise.

I've tried talking to them before about it, but... I always got shot down. Same general excuses. I'd love a dog right now... But, there's no possible way of getting one right now.

As for the other question. I'm not sure. Sorry!

Crap, I just mailed the wrong things! >_<

I got distracted and threw the things I meant to throw in a different box and mailed them. I kind of feel like an idiot. At least they went to the right person, I just wasn't done wrapping them yet! :( So now I have to mail a second box out with the other stuff *urgh*

I can't find the post to quote-- but in response to having a dog in college!

I've had a dog my entire career in college. My first three semesters were Harlow alone, living alone. Took a break for a few years, have been back now for coming up on fourth semester. I've pretty consistently had three dogs now, all of whom are high exercise requirements.

With Harlow all by myself, I lived in a basement apartment. I took her to pet stores, hiking, ect. I was working 20 hours a week plus working full time. Financially it was not bad at all and it was not a stretch to keep her properly socialized and exercised.

With the three (four?) we have now, pretty much the same deal except I have DH who helps out. I do all the training and stuff with Rider and Tulsa. He mainly handles Harlow and now Story as well. For me personally, mushing is the only way I can make multiple dogs work right now as far as physical exercise goes. I'm working 35 hours a week on top of 8 credit hours at school. I do have dog jobs, but normally my schedule allows not for me to take them to one and the other, because of the dogs I own, they do not often attend. But alas, we make it work.

I'm just saying it isn't impossible. :D

I got Elsie during my undergrad, and I'm in grad school now. It's working out really well, but I have a savings as a cushion and my parents do provide some safety net--we're close and my dad absolutely adores Elsie, so if I need help with her (like in Jan, when I go to Florida, he'll dog sit) I have back up. That's not to say people who don't have that safety net shouldn't get a dog, just that in my particular case it makes it easier.

In terms of time, it worked great. I think it was a good choice.

I think you should make a topic about the dog college thing, it'd be nice to have that in the forum instead of hidden in the venting thread! :)
