The "mistakes" regarding your dogs breed thread

This is kind of inspired by the discussion over at the venting bread about those of us who have had their dogs breed mistaken or worse ... When people argue WITH you about your dogs breed.

I want to hear your vents/rants & / or funny stories about what your dogs have been mistaken as xD.

Me: Bear has been mistaken as a: chihuahua, a pit bull puppy (he was 4 years old at the time!) & a bull terrier.

Izze: a Border collie, Australian shepherd, & German shepherd.

Josefina: a coyote / wolf hybrid :rofl1:

Well I don't have breeds but people really, REALLY want to know what Pip is. If I offer my opinion, they argue with me. If I say I don't know, they argue with me. The only thing people DON'T argue with is if I call him a long-haired pit bull, which is totally made up. Go figure.

Nobody hardly ever asks or cares about Maisy. Black and brindle/tan dogs are apparently either invisible or terrifying to strangers. If anyone asks and I say "hound mix," nobody ever argues about it so maybe it's just that obvious.

Squash... lol. Hardly anyone in the city even KNOWS what an Alaskan is, and nobody ever believes me if I say he's a husky mix. ONE time at a skijor race someone asked and I said "Believe it or not, he's an Alaskan mix" and the guy said "Oh, yea, you can totally see that in his face!" Otherwise, nada... in fact, in a different skijor race we did they would announce your name, where you lived, and your dog's name and breed as you were coming down to the finish line. And ours went something like this: " Number X, Sass from Minnesota with Squash, a 2 year old.... *very very long, very pregnant pause* ... hus... ky mix." I laughed until I peed.

My boss has a "renaissance bull dog" or something like that. She's hairy and bulldoggy, but not built like Pip. I shall start calling her a hairy pitbull and see what her owner thinks!

When Journey was younger everyone thought she was a Bernese Mountain Dog puppy and used to go on and on about those 'big feet' and how huge she was going to get. A lot of people still think she's a Berner puppy (because tricolour). Or a St. Bernard haha. But recently I've had a few Border Collie guesses, too. And actually, most people just ask me what kind of mix she is. The weirdest is that I had a couple of people use fake Australian accents when talking to her after telling them what she was. I didn't bother telling them that the breed isn't actually from Australia, although I probably should have.

Dance doesn't get too many breed guesses or comments lately for some reason. Tollers are far more common now than they used to be, so I think even if people don't know what she is, they've likely seen one before. I get questioned as to why her nose is pink a lot, and if she can see... which is weird. In the past somebody guessed her to be a "longhaired red nosed Pit Bull", and sometimes I get doodle comments or mini golden comments. And ironically, I get asked fairly often if she's an Aussie.

The Dobermans don't get many guesses. I think most people can recognize a Doberman. Sometimes people will ask if they're Great Danes or Greyhounds, but I think they just get those breed names and Doberman mixed up somehow. I've been asked what Ripley is mixed with to make him brown, too. And a lot of "wow, the red ones are so rare, where'd you get him?", to which I tell them they're not uncommon at all. The strangest was the time somebody commented on what a pretty Dobe Keira was and then asked if Ripley was a chocolate Lab while they were out together.

Across the board though, the most common comment I get for all of my dogs is that they're all too small for their breeds. Even from people who own the same breeds (but granted, know nothing about them). Somebody even told me once that I got ripped off on my Dobes because there is no way they can be purebred at their sizes. Oh, people...

We've gotten "fox mix" two or three times before, believe it or not.

But mostly just "GSD mix" (and I guess they're right, in a way, it's just that the other part of the equation is GSD as well...) with the most popular opinion being GSD x Lab mix.

For the most part, people seem to recognize him as a GSD - or at least a "police dog", which I guess is a breed now LOL

I've never really had any actually argue about what breed my dog is.

Chloe is an Australian Shepherd/farm collie mix, and I've had people ask if she is a Border Collie or an Australian Shepherd. I typically just say "collie mix" and they go, "Oh, okay!"

With Abrams, I was told, "He is gong to be a gorgeous Chocolate Lab when he grows up." Ummmm....thank you? :lol-sign: I can understand why people say he's a chocolate lab, but I haven't corrected anyone yet. Hopefully as he matures people will be able to tell he isn't a Lab. A lot of people can tell he isn't a Lab because I get, "What breed is he?" and then I say Chesapeake Bay Retriever and they so, "Oh, okay!"

One person did think he was a Weim pup confused, but she readily accepted that he was a Chessie when I corrected her.

I got that a lot when Cohen was a puppy too. The tricolour thing really seems to throw people off.

Other than that, wayward guesses are boring. I get a lot of people thinking Cohen is a Border Collie or Border Collie cross. Not too many people believe she's purebred. Just a few days ago I had someone ask me if she was "one of those New Zealand sheep dogs" which I guess was close enough. Berner is definitely the most wayward guess I've ever received.

I lot of people think my dogs are young because they're small/not overweight. People are surprised when I tell them that, yes, both are full grown.

As far as Mega is concerned, most can identify Chihuahua but remark that she has really really long legs. I try to tell people there's a lot of variety in the breed when unscrupulous breeders mill puppies, but people tend to stop paying attention about half way through my sentence.

I've had many people argue with me about Elsie, and I've been accused of 'making it up' when I tell them she's a Belgian shepherd.

I've gotten husky, chow, German shepherd, coyote mix, wolf mix, fox mix, Pomeranian mix...

jayson is apparently my very yellow rare rottweiler.:lol-sign: i dont see how they think that . sad part is the person even owns a yellow lab. lol

Gambit gets wolfdog a lot. Also aussie, catahoula, shepard, collie, and husky. Then there's the perrenial favorite 'what the heck is that?'
Ask a trucker, though, and 90% of them peg him straight off.
Argon was usually pretty easy, though people always tried to convince me there was nobassett in him. Dude, I saw him at 4 weeks old nursing from his mother the pure bassett hound. I know it doesn't show in him, but don't tell me you know him better then I do

Hudson gets border collie a lot

Meg gets greyhound a lot, which is pretty funny. I think the brindle throws people. They either want to say pitbull but don't want to sound insulting, or they really just think greyhounds are the only brindle breed. She's had one person ever correctly ID her as a Mountain Cur. Even dog people just stare at me like I'm making it up when I say it.

Gusto gets a lot of Boston Terrier, which is fair enough I think. Mostly just "What is he?!". Border collie/something is my usual answer.

Rat Terrier or Fox Terrier.

Lol some "non extreme" dog people are funny :lol-sign: like I said its all cool if the person admits their mistake, I mean an honest mistake is an honest mistake. It's cool no problem, the issue arises when someone is "sure" they "know" what breed my dog is ... Uh ... Better then me??? I don't think so.

I have actually had people freak out because they are "sure" Josefina is a coydog & she is going to "go crazy" & kill me in my sleep :rofl1:. Yeah ... Ok ... I will be sure to be on the look out for that.

On a slightly elated note: does anyone have any stories regarding hilarious, outlandish training advice by the "general public"?

A few people have thought Jackson was a Westie. I think it's the haircut, and obviously he's a small terrier, and light-ish colored. So I feel like it's not too far off. There was one time where someone insisted he was .... something, and for the life of me, I can't remember now what breed, but I remember it was really off the wall and I had a face?

Almost everyone insists there's no way he's a yorkie though. He's just "too big".

When I had puppy Penny, I had two people argue with me that a Vizsla is a made up breed& I should go back to the breeder to get my money back. I was actually shocked that people would be so bold as to argue with me when they don't know ..

I've gotten pitbull, lab, dachshund, lab, Weim. Some people can tell she's a hunting kind of dog but don't know what kind shah

Zuma has gotten a lot of guesses, my favorite being husky/chihuahua. Because blue eyes and big ears.

Zinga doesn't get guesses, she gets "what.. What is she?". I always thought she'd get mistaken for a smooth coat border, but she never does.

German shepherd and Corgi mix.

Coyote mix.... probably some others, less crazy, guesses.
