I usually get, "is she a long-haired chihuahua?" but I have actually been surprised with how many people in my small town ask if she is a papillon. I think half of the people I tell that too think I'm making up a breed or it's a mix or something. :p

I got asked if she was a border collie puppy once, but by a six year old girl, who probably wasn't too well-versed in breeds. At ten weeks, Cali was probably about the size of a two week old border collie, at the very most. I could see someone having mistaken her for one at the age, at least until they realized how small she actually was. She also got called a "barking cat" once and my guy friends tell me how she is a rat, and not an actual dog, all the time.

Yeah... Well I had a lady exclaim, "What a cute Jack Russel!!!" at Keeva once. LMAO Other than that, some people argue that she's not a purebred (um guys, I have her pedigree in a folder at home? lol), even once a vet that came to tour my work and saw her playing. Or people who very helpfully announce, "That one has some corgi in her!" and I'm like, "OMG you might be right!!!" lol

Also had a woman at an AKC Rally trial insist Macky had to be some rarer breed of spaniel and not a mix. "Sussex? Field Spaniel! Welsh Springer?" WTF NO. She's a mutt!!! She does have strong spaniel type but she's not purebred. And also definitely part Golden.

Blossom... um yeah. People don't say anything because they assume GSD mix. Most people are overwhelmed by the word "Malinois" so I stick with Belgian Shepherd because then nobody goes, "What's THAT?!" They just nod. Have had a guy tell me about how you can't trust GSDs, they turn on you! Good thing I don't have a GSD. lol

People take one look at Circus and ask, "Blue heeler and...?" That's the ONLY guess I've gotten so far; I live in an area where there just isn't a wide variety of dog breeds, anything that isn't the typical pitbull/lab-mix or Chihuahua-mix garners a lot of attention.

Lugia gets a lot of interesting guesses, mostly Borzoi, greyhound, Saluki, one person even asked me if she was a Border collie x whippet -- I can kinda see why they'd think that!
I have been to your FB page for Lugia (love the name by the way :D) & I don't know what your new puppy is but she is so cute it should be illegal

When Wesley was a puppy, Wheaten Terrier. Now he is a goldendoodle/labradoodle. Drives me insane, even though it really shouldn't. :lol-sign:

When Bean was a pup, I took him in to PetsMart. He was swooped down on by some young employee who crooned that Australian Shepherds are her FAVORITE breed and she just LOVES THEM SO MUCH.

I didn't have the heart to tell her that he was a Border Collie.

I've given up. When people tell me they like my German shepherd, I say thanks. :]
LOL!! Same here.

The Weirdest thing happened to me at a street fair a few weeks back, a lady came up to me and started petting Fleetwood, and casually asked me "is he a golden retriever?"

..............

I waited for the punch line, or something, but... She was dead serious.

Anyway, I get a lot of people telling me about how great their old Doberman or shepherd was, or just start taking guesses on what he is, and then they ask me "what do you think he's mixed with?".... And occasionally of people try to tell me that his "breeder" ripped me off and sold me a mixed breed. Because he's definitely a German shepherd mix.

One of the weirder guesses was border collie/Dalmatian.

I am so excited to hear all the guesses I will get with Pup, pup. I should carry around a special prize for whoever actually gets it right. If that is ever going to happen, which is unlikely.

I think the best was when Renegade got pegged as a chihuahua terrier mix.

Everybody guessed Rosey as a German Shepherd Dog mix, which was right.

Not many wrong breed guesses. I'm positive Charlotte is mostly Pit Bull with maybe some Cur thrown in there, but everyone has their opinion as to what she is, and given she was found a stray, I don't argue much.

Most people know what Ma'ii is, but I had one lady ask me if he was a Staff mix.

Uuuhhhhhhhhh.......

We had a Beauceron(sp?) come into our store and another customer loudly exclaimed "It's a Doberman with fur!" lol

I don't think it's ignorance or stupidity lol there's lots of things out there that have lots of variety :) If you aren't into dogs, you will just assume it's a particular breed you identify with! Sometimes their guesses are silly, but it's only because we know& love our breed so the differences are huge!

I prefer when people ask 'Is she a so& so?' and the only thing that bothers me is when people tell me I cannot possibly be correct about the breed. Ohhh she's not a Vizsla, I've been wrong all along! She's a Lab. Thanks for correcting me so violently!!

I wish there was a pill or a treatment for ignorance/stupidity of the mainstream human race :/
I don't think that's quite fair. I mean, I know we all have these threads to joke around about what people have said which is all fun. But not everyone is going to be into dogs like us.

I mean, the amount of cars I can identify can be listed on one of my hands, the knowledge I have about fishing is limited to what I learned when my dad took me out as a kid, my parents talking geek sounds like another language to me, when my boss talks any type of sports to someone I'm trying to figure out if they're just making things up.

We all have our special interests and that's great and yeah, sometimes people can be a little scary with the things they ask but I think it's a good thing to remember we're not smarter or above those people because there is a good chance I have and will ask a question they deem incredibly 'stupid' and obvious about something they are passionate about.

Reminds me when I was at my first disc dog club meeting and I was asked what discs I have. My answer? "A couple green ones and a white one that turns purple in the sun...."

They all laughed and were a second away from patting me on the head like an inept but slightly amusing toddler.

There is always going to be stuff I don't know and it keeps me humble but I would like to think it's not lack of intelligence.

Yeah, I don't expect most people to know what kind of dog I have. To most people, a dog is a dog is a dog. The vast majority of people are not dog enthusiasts like most of us here tend to be.

Sure, it might get old after a while to answer the same question over and over again, but rarely do I think the person is stupid (except for the choc Lab/Doberman comment... that was a little dense lol).

It never makes me angry when somebody doesn't know what my dog is, or gives me false information regarding my own breed. Sure, it might be frustrating sometimes if the person is being rude about it and acting like a know it all, but whatever. Such is life.

Oh dear! No one every really confused Gipsy with another breed. I mean... everyone knows what a lab looks like.

With Zora... it's already starting! Awwwww Your Rottie/Dobe/German Shepherd (WTF, GSD?) Puppy as a Rottie/Dobe OK. I can see how some may confuse... but a GSD? o_O
Most people don't know what a beauceron is anyway.
"Oh what breed is your puppy?"
"A Beauceron"
"A what-a-whata?"
"A beauceron or Berge de beauce!
"Oh is that one of those new breeds?"
"No, actually it's a breed that has been around for years and is well known in France!"
"Uhhuh, sure. I say modern new breed" -.-
