It's interesting to see the terminology used by many of the pro and con people.

This is "in general" - not calling anyone out specifically, but...

Pro Circ: medical procedure
Con Circ: mutilation

Removing normal functioning body parts does not equal putting a child in a car seat.

One is permanent and not proven to be beneficial.
The other is temporary and definitely beneficial.

I was JUST thinking this exact thing while I was brushing my teeth just now. I wouldn't walk up to someone who lost their arm and say "Hey... how did you end up so mutilated" lol

This is the crux of the argument...I am in NO way in favor of stopping a man from getting a circumcision...you are correct, HIS choice.....but NOT his parent's choice.
Do you think children should wait until they are grown and can choose to be immunized? There are lots of risks, not all surface in childhood. Maybe a child will develop a certain cancer at age 25 because of the choice their parent made to get a certain immunization done at age 3 months.

And we could list things like that on and on and on. The government here has been moving towards mandatory immunizations for years IMO through the public school system. What happens when that choice is taken from parents? The government decides WHICH vaccinations they MUST have and when, including flu shots of course.

(no snark or sarcasm added btw)

ETA: This argument can go on forever, much like an abortion, religion, or political thread, LOL. I think I've read and said about everything worth saying or reading. Both sides have their points, some valid, some grasping. I do appreciate many of the posts.........I learned a few things :)

I will agree that it is both a medical procedure AND mutilation.

Mutilation:

Some ethnic groups practice ritual mutilation, e.g. scarification, burning, flagellation, tattooing, circumcision or wheeling, as part of a rite of passage. In some cases, the term may apply to treatment of dead bodies, such as soldiers mutilated after they have been killed by an enemy.

Actually, I do fight to keep this choice with the parents...it is a medical one and there are proven pros and cons to it. I personally dont give vaccinations and think they are definitely more harm than good. However, this falls under the you have to make choices for your child, surgery, medications, etc. Circumcision is not the same..it is a procedure to REMOVE a functioning part of the body for looks.

Ah, but you are fighting to keep immunization choices with parents because you want the right to choose not to give vaccines, yet you are more than ready to take away other rights of choice because you deem them cosmetic :(

As a child of someone who barely lived through polio (my father) and someone who knows other families who lost people to polio, I find some vaccines do much more good than harm. But I would also fight by your side to keep it a CHOICE rather than your child be forced against your wishes, by people who do not know your child or care about them personally.

Not me deeming them cosmetic...all the major medical associations that do that;)

And again, I actually have stated several times I really dont support legislating it away BUT I am also very against mutilating a penis for yes, cosmetic and social reasons

This thread has reached the point where no one is going to change anyone's mind and no one is going to agree. Just leave it the heck alone.

Then I really don't know why we're (you and I) discussing this. I do believe the topic was 'circumcision as a criminal act', not 'is circumcision right or wrong' :p

“The aim of argument, or of discussion, should not be victory, but progress.†~Joseph Joubert.

Judging by the thread views, its not only the people posting on this thread who are participating on it. If just one or two of them now knows not to retract a baby’s foreskin, that a foreskin is not ‘just’ a flap of skin and actually performs a function, or that circumcision is NOT a normal everyday procedure worldwide as most Americans believe, then I would say progress has been made. :)

I admit that I had no idea that you don't retract a babies foreskin. Neither did my foreskin baring husband. So it was good to learn that.

Same here. Kind of makes me want to re-discuss this with my husband. He is circ'ed and basically said yes we're doing it if we have a boy. Mom is a nurse from a "circ'ed is cleaner" school of thought but really, if that's not true I don't see the point in doing that to my newborn son.

Carry on.
