I like one dipped in ketchup, the next one dipped in tarter sauce. I don't usually put vinegar on fries because it makes them soggy. But I love malt vinegar on deep fried or breaded fish and even a very thin bit of tarter on the fish. Trying to cut out some of that extra fat since trying to lose weight, on baked fish, I sometimes put sweet pickle relish to dip it in instead of tarter sauce...just the relish and that tastes pretty good too.

Vinegar is win!!!! If you can't buy it, go to Captain D's and order something cheap but ask for a couple handfuls of malt vinegar. We have tons in a jar from there lol! (Same with taco bell sauce!)

Carrie, if you want something to tasty-up non-fried fish, try mango salsa. Cut up a mango, a little cilantro (or a lot if you like it -- it's incredibly good for you), pinch of sea salt, some chopped green onion and chopped fresh hot pepper of your choice, top it off with a dash of lime juice, toss and enjoy your fish.

The last I tried it with was swai, which isn't bad, which is pretty good considering the only fish I REALLY like tends to be cold water, deep sea types, halibut, mahi, tuna, salmon, etc.

We don't have that here, we only have Long John Silver's. And they limit vinegar to 4 packets per order.

Fries?

or

Chips?

Everyone puts vinegar on their chips... except my other half. Standard question - do you want salt and vinegar? No chippy DOESN'T have vinegar.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE American Chip Spice (I don't know why it's called this, as I suspect it's not American... :rofl1: )

But that is very hard to come by anywhere but East Yorkshire (my home county) :( So I rarely ever have it.

Usually I just have salt and loads of vinegar :D

But chips and gravy is good tooooooo -mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...!!! Again another very common combination from the chippy!! The chips go all mushy... nom nom.

And I will basically eat chilli sauce on anything - so that too.

Renee! I HAVE used that! I forgot! LOL. It's really, really yummy on white fish I think. And on anything really. The problem is, I just threw out a container because I used it once, then forgot about it and it expired.

Salt and vinegar potato chips are disgusting (IMO) and I have always thought that was an extremely radical flavor. I don't know anyone who likes them except a few people and they get a lot of weird looks for it, lol. I guess it's a southern (American) thing. Here the only thing that people really put on fries is ketchup or chili, bacon, and cheese.

I am not trying to be narrow minded about my fries. I am just completely shocked over the things that apparently half the world puts on fries that I was unaware of. Especially vinegar. It just has such a nasty smell and flavor. I didn't realize it was anything but an ingredient to be used in trace amounts or as a cleaner.

And here I thought I was so worldly and open-minded about food.
lol
Salt and vinegar crisps are one of the most popular flavours in the UK :)

And also in the UK, I would say pretty much every restaurant has vinegar on the tables in bottles for you to put on your chips/dinner. It's just normal to us :)

The American chip spice is essentially seasoned salt. I LOVE seasoned salt. We don't have that brand here (or if we do it's not common) but I suspect it's called that because it's similar to the seasoned salt that is commonly found on fries in America.

While I am not a fan of vinegar on fries (I like them crisp, not soggy) I LOVE salt and viegar chips! Vinegar is really a wonderful and tasty condiment. I think too many people have only tried or used the kind for that I deem only useful for cleaning...there is a HUGE difference in the good brands! Balsamic vinegar is so good and is actually even used in desserts. Red wine vinegar, apple cider (GOOD with the mother), rice vinegar, malt vinegar...on and on. So mnay flavors and so many uses. I cant even imagine trying to cook the majority of my meals without it!

I voted vinegar because YUM but also approve of ketchup and Frosty.

The best, however, is cheese, bacon bits, and chives, with ranch dressing for dipping.

I've never heard of Thousand Island
Oh, haha. Didn't notice that you weren't from the states. Thousand island is a dip or dressing that is used on salads or for dipping things in. It can have lots of other ingredients, too but the base of it is mayo and ketchup. I don't know if those two ingredients alone "qualify" as thousand island or if it has to be more "dressed up" than that.

I must say, this is a super interesting thread, lol. I am learning so much!

That does sound good! There is a restaurant around here that serves a dish with fries covered in pulled pork, bbq sauce, bacon, ranch, and MAYBE cheese on it! I want to try it some time but I can't be eating like that any time soon! lol
