We all, of course, have our opinions. I've seen some terrible movies. This wasn't one of them. I allowed myself to enjoy it for what it was. ;)
Some of us are huge fans of the series, though, and were pretty disappointed by the movie in comparison.

I haven't seen it yet, but I hope I can at least enjoy it. Everyone I know who has seen it already said it was a disappointment. Oh well, I guess - even if it's terrible, I've still got most of the 2nd season and all of the 3rd to watch! :)

We just saw it and have mixed emotions.

I never saw the series before so to me this was a new movie. I loved it, it was enjoyable and thought it was beautiful.

On the other hand, my son and husband are HUGE fans of Avatar, and they walked out really pissed at M Night. lol So for the entire 30 minute drive home, all I heard were they're complaints. So I told them I'll go see the next 2 movies on my own. LOL

I saw it and thought it was an ok movie, I'd never heard of the serious though. It had lots of good special effects... not really my type of movie in the first place lol but I don't think it was awful

so I think if you go and enjoy it for what it is.. and try to kind of forget about the series, then its ok, but everyone in the theater who were obviously fans of the series were pretty put off/pissed by the whole thing.

I do think its kind of rude to take a series and massacre it for the movie.. thats like taking a book and TOTALLY changing the story. its bad for those who love the movie/tv show and go to see the movie because of that

If they did that to twilight I WOULD BE SO FRIKIN PISSED lol

Why? It's not like they could make it worse :lol-sign:
well lets see... the first book twilight has sold over 100 million copies
and eclipse made 70 million opening night..

yup.. obviously the most horrible series on earth.

You have every right to your opinion, I don't care that some people don't like twilight.. I don't enjoy the show airbender. that doesn't mean the show sucks, it means its not something that personally interests me.

I like being respectful of other peoples opinions/taste on movies and books. What some people consider the worst book/movie ever might be somebody elses favorite, and vice versa. Its about taste, opinion, and just personality.. usually not just about the quality of the material itself.

Twilight appeals to some, and not to others. and thats fine with me.. I just think its kind of pathetic how passionate people are about HATING on the books (especially those that have not even read them).

don't like them? fine. but to say that they can't get any worse I think is ridiculous, they are obviously very well liked books/movies.. and if they really were the WORST, nobody would read them or enjoy the movies, and they wouldn't be as sucessful as they are.

then again, there are some people who really think that THEIR OPINION is the end all and "king of all critiques" for any given piece of material lol which is pretty pathetic in itself, but I get that some people have that complex.

My 4 year old nephew is in the stage of "I don't like pokemon, they suck and its stupid"
im sorry that some people never grow out of that state of mind lol

I LOVED the series! And I normally like shyamalan but I am not sure I want to see the movie for things like what Nech posted. I know the mispronouncing will annoy the heck out of me because it had to be deliberate.

Its one of the best anime (even if its american anime) series out there, why purposefully **** off your core audience?

ANd as to the twilight thing. They wrecked the movie. The book was ok, the movie was horrid. So I agree they couldn't make it much worse...

Twilight never sold 100 million copies. The first book sold about 17 million, but that is still very good for a book. I thought Eclipse movie was pretty good, my family says it is the best in the movie series.

I was actually debating whether or not to see Avatar instead, but this thread change my mind.

Oh and as for airbender, I think this review pretty much covered it

"The movie was fair. Big sigh. Where do I start? Well let's start at the sticking point that everyone has had with this movie. In case you missed it, a lot of noise has been made because Noah Ringer (Aang), Nicola Petlz (Katara) and Jackson Rathbone (Sokka) are White actors cast in the roles of Inuit and Asian characters. While I didn't like the fact that they white washed 3 of the main characters it was not that much of a distraction, especially once they left the Southern Water Nation. The biggest problem with these actors is that they sucked. Their acting was the equivalent of kids reading bad book reports to a captive audience. While there may have been better actors of color out there, in their defense, it wasn't totally their fault. M. Night Shyamalan wrote, produced and directed it, so he's responsible.

However, considering that he took roughly 420 minutes worth of material and condensed it into 94 minutes gives him very little time to briefly touch on very complicated and sophisticated material. Granted it was great material, but he only had 94 minutes to present it. "

"The fun, happy go lucky Aang was turned into a sour, drab 12 year old. Sokka's joking, ingenuity and protectiveness was turned into weird looks in close up with little meaning. The preachy, motherly Katara was just there, not really serving a purpose. Zuko, desperate to regain his honor so that he can return home as heir to the throne was somewhat empty. Side note - actor Dev Patel is definitely an actor to watch. He took lousy material and made it look good. Also for the fans of the Kyoshi Warriors and Suki, they were totally cut. Uncle Iroh was very caring but he came off as a whiny woman and when we did get to see the dragon it was an empty scene. And finally while Commander Zhao came off as having testicals the size of watermelons his character also came off as totally confused and unsure

The sad truth is, it is completely impossible to present such complicated and sophisticated material in 94 minutes. If I hadn't been a fan of the series I would have thought it was the worst movie of the year. Only fans of the series can follow what is going on in the movie and we were left wanting. I understand why the reviews were as bad as they have been.. "

according to my little cousin (fan of the show) this reviewer described how he felt about the whole thing

People liking it has nothing to do with the quality of it. Look at all of the reality TV shows like John and Kate plus 8, Little People, Dawg the Bounty Hunter, etc. Not a single person can argue that these are quality shows, but they are watched by a lot of people. Similarly for a book, being a self-insert fantasy of a middle aged woman with hints necrophilia and bestiality will not stop millions of people liking it, regardless of the poor quality of the writing.

It's not a personal interest or a taste thing in Twilight's case - Twilight really does suck. They're page-turners, but they're terribly written with plots that only show up in the last 2/3rds of the books, terrible characterization (or none, in the case of Bella), limited vocabulary, and gaping holes in the canon that Stephenie Meyer has been extensively criticized about and, as far as I know, has no logical explanations for. (Don't even get me started on the pedophilia and child-grooming. WTF) If twilight fans haven't figured out that these books suck yet, they really need to go read some reviews. If they still enjoy the books, there's nothing wrong with that, but I do think that blindly saying Twilight is awesome is ridiculous. It's a successful book, but it's not awesome. And that's enough of my off-topicness about Twilight.

:yikes::yikes:

They white-washed the characters? WTF? Saka and Katara are very obviously Inuit. I could never tell what race Aang was, though, but still, that's so disgusting. It's been a while since I've seen any previews so I actually don't remember what Katara and Saka looked like.

Exactly. It's popular. Not well written. No one is going to argue the fact that Twilight it popular, but I can argue with you all day over the writing. Go through the books and count how many times she uses the word "chagrin" seriously. Its crazy.

Noludoru said it best. It's successful. Not a well written series by any stretch of the imagination. I have a friend who's an editor who read them, and went through and could see all the other books that she got a lot of ideas from. Notably Bronte's books and some others I can't recall at the moment.

What really torks me off is that I was at Target a few weeks ago and they had an endcap of Avatar toys. HURRAY! I haven't seen Avatar toys in years! All I have is some little figurines on landscapes that connect together. So they have Sokka, two Aang toys, Zuko, the Blue Spirit...
but wait. No Katara.

Which is exactly what happened when they first had Avatar toys. Don't get me wrong, Sokka is my favourite character and all, but NO KATARA? Hello? I think you could easily argue she's more important to the story than Sokka is. And she's DEFINITELY more important than the flippin' Blue Spirit character.
BOO TOY MAKERS. BOO.

And yeah, they at one point had full season boxsets (that's what I have) and I know at Target this week they are having a season 1 DVD sale, but it's not the boxset, it's the individual disks that have I believe four episodes on them - the discs for seasons 2 and 3 have five episodes per DVD, but season 1 has four per DVD. They might have changed that by now. I dunno if you can still find the boxsets in stores, maybe a Best Buy or something? They're still on Amazon though.
