Glass Onion's posted reply said "They may have a beef with high fructose corn syrup."

"Have a beef" = To have an argument or concern with something.

I don't think the OP said there were hidden sugars in meat though? If it's one of those packaged pre-cooked or ready-to-cook meats and has flavoring .... say, like "Honey Teriyaki Beef" or something ... then yeah, that would have sugar in it. But by law it would have to be listed in the ingredients.
Sorry, just ignore those posts--apparently I can't read this weekend!! I read it as "They may have beef with high fructose corn syrup." and was like "holy crap that's just nasty!" Carry on.....

Ehh... I dont know I just cant buy into all these types of films.

Anyway, I live in a city its not like I can buy myself some chickens/cows to raise and grow my own veggies... I eat what I can buy at the supermarket, or I dont eat... I choose the former.

In the summer I like to buy produce at the farmers markets because it is usually fresher but thats it.

It's not entirely out of the question that they are inject beef with HFCS, because they're already injecting MSG water into chicken to make it weigh more and look plumper. That doesn't do anyone with MSG allergies any good and it's for no other reason than to make an inferior cut of meat look better while it's up for sale.

Myself, I haven't seen the documentary and I don't particularly have any desire to either. I know a lot of the horrors that go on in the food industry. They're the same types of horrors that go in EVERY SINGLE OTHER MAJOR INDUSTRY OUT THERE. Clothes, cars, beverages, electronics equipment...you name it, some poor schmuck is being abused, maimed or killed in the making of it. That's pretty much what it means to be a major industry.

As far as my food goes, I'm trying as hard as I can to get stuff that's local and fresh and I'm looking at doing a couple container gardens this summer to get some of my veggies since I'm stuck in the ^*&^ing suburbs and can't have chickens. The beef I currently use comes from JJ's roommates' parents, who buys it from a local co-op or something like that, so it's better than the meat in the grocery store.

They do that with lean meat too. There's a certain number they can't go over (which I don't know off the top of my head) but essentially your 99% learn cut is actually about 90% at best once you take out all the water they added in to skew the ratio.

I eat (mostly) organic and I don't eat meat. I don't meat because of all the crap thats done with it, but because I simply don't like the taste of it (except chicken... I do eat chicken on occasion, but not often.) A lot of the food regulations here in Germany are stricter than in the US - a lot of the crap thats on American Veggies or in Animals, isn't even aloud to be used here. For example growth hormons given to Cows ect. to make them grow faster, produce more milk ect. Those hormons don't just stay in you're meat, they're in the milk and other dairy products, which imo is discusting.
What bothers me more than where my food comes from, is whats actually in it. All you have to do is grab a yohgurt out of the fridge and check whats on the ingrediants list. I have no idea what half of that stuff is, nor do I really want to. Thats NOT supposed to be in yohgurt. And theres probably more stuff in there thats not listed. (like the growth hormons from the cow). I don't get why the simplest things have to be "enhanced" by artifical flavoring or colouring... Ok, it looks and possibly tastes better, but siriously, whats the point? 100 years ago people were just fine with eating things with out that crap.

x2!

I am trying to buy as much local stuff as I can, meat, chicken and eggs. I also try to buy other items that are certified fair trade. I can't do it all the time, but I make a very reasonable effort. Hey, even the new car was built in Kansas City :)

Dustin and I just need to go to our local health food stores and start finding out where we can buy local/organic. And hey, maybe we'd get involved or start meeting other like minded parents. It is really lonely when you don't know anyone else that shares your concerns/values/parenting styles. I know there are pro-breastfeeding, anti-vaccine, pro natural people in the area, just don't know any of them because I wasn't raised in/around that kind of lifestyle.

It is just really unfortunate that WIC doesn't support organic produce. It'd be nice if I could get organic milk.

One day, I secretly hope to be able to raise our own chickens

Meh. I grew up getting my vaccinations, eating canned baby food, non - organic milk, and meat from the supermarket and I'm fine. I try to eat healthy now but that's more so because I don't want to gain a ton of weight now that I sit on my butt all day for my job. I think a lot of these documentaries are really misleading. Like Super Size Me. Of course if you eat McDonalds supersized every day you're going to get fat and feel like crap. They didn't have to make a documentary, I could have told them that. But if you eat McDonald's every once in awhile is that going to happen? Probably not. Also, eating organic, all natural, no corn syrup food is expensive. I have a friend who is obsessive about what she buys for her family and she told me when they started eating that way their food bill tripled. :yikes: No thank you.

Wish they would find a way to humanely put everything i need in a capsule and call it all good. I could give up food if that were possible. Since i have food issues with most fruits and veggies..it goes way beyond just "dont like" taking out meat leave nada. So I just go around feeling like a hypocrite.

I'm not going to argue that organic food costs more (although its not three times as much), however by buying organic, natural and no corn syrup food, you can be pretty sure that you don't have pestisides on your food, you aren't supporting companies like monsanto and your food doesn't have growth hormones or other discusting things in it.
You can also just cut your food bill down by not buying processed foods and such (not saying you are - just in general) and instead investing your money in local or organic foods and ethically treated animals.

ok... here is a totally STUPID question lol.

a Garden needs lots of sunlight too right? LOL I am the opposite of a green thumb if you can't tell. But I would like to have a garden with Hannah one day more for the learning aspect then anything else. but do veggie gardens needs lots of sunlight like flowers?

cause that seriously puts a damper on our ability to have a garden. We just don't really have any areas in the front or back yard that get any consistent sunlight.

Most of my meat comes from hunting and our own cattle. The veggies I get are locally grown if I didn't grow them myself, and I buy my eggs from a neighbor because I no longer have chickens. The only reason I do all that is because it's cheaper for me to do so, and I like being as self-sufficient as possible. I eat a fast food lunch most days because I'm too lazy to bring my lunch to work, and I really don't feel bad about that.

I'd LOVE to be able to have my own chickens, although I'd need the chicken coop of doom to keep Miss Sally out--"OOOOO--we're going you-catch-um prey model raw?! Thanks Mom!!!!!!"

Have you thought about growing your own veggies and stuff come spring Tessa? You don't really even need a yard, there are options for container gardens that you can grow veggies and even strawberries in. Also, try getting cozy with people that garden. There are tons of people at my work who have veggie gardens that just give TONS of stuff away for free every year for whoever wants it.

I don't know about organic, but as a taxpayer whose dollars do go to support a WIC here in my own state, I would rather WIC cover healthy whole foods than processed crap. If people eat healthier they tend to be healthier, and healthier people is better for everyone in the long run.

We have this issue too in our own yard. I'm going to give it a go anyway this year and see how it turns out....

Yeah drives me crazy. The grass won't even grow in some places because it doesn't get any sunlight at all lol. We even cut down one of the trees in the backyard (mostly because we didn't want it to end up coming through the living room if it were to fall over one day lol) and it still did open up much more space for sunlight.

We actually already have a garden. We grow corn, bell peppers, strawberries, cucumbers, tomatoes, and cantelope. We don't have good land to grow it on.. very, very dry and hard to keep up a garden, though. Our corn didn't turn out last year. We maybe only got one meal out of the entire thing we planted. BUT, we had WAY surplus of tomatoes and cucumbers. Also, not sure how long we'll be living here. When we do move out, our only option for a "garden" will be growing in pots outside our apartment if even that is an option. So, in the summer we do currently have a way to get some fresh vegetables. If we did move out, I'm sure we'd still get some surplus of the garden handed our way, assuming his grandparents would be healthy enough to plant and maintain garden without us.

Certainly not becoming a vegetarian yet, but I do want to eat less meat, and eat ONLY local meat if I can. Like I said, we'll still have to look into it.

You can get free range antibiotic-free meat at the grocery store. That's what I buy. It's a little more expensive but I'm paying for our well-being.

(Also, I hate documentaries.)

I am not even going to get into it to much because I have a beef with the WIC system anyways. I am not against giving to mothers who really need it, but half of my neighborhood is on WIC- and none of them need it. They all have brand new, more expensive cars that we have, have new video game consoles, etc.

But anyway--- I would rather have 100 mothers who are in dire need to feed their children get regular milk than 50 people get organic milk.
