My apartment has several banned breeds. Since I am now considering a dog of my own, I got a copy of the list to ensure I was within their rules. The complete list is as follows
Akitas
Alaskan Malamutes
Boxers
Bull Terrier
Chow
Dalmation
Doberman
G. Shepard
Pit Bulls
Rott
Husky
Presa Canario
Wolf Hybrid
Beuceron
Belgian Malinois
Terv
Finish Spitz
Mancester Terrier (I'm assuming because they look like Dobe's?)
Shiba Inu
And Drumroll please......The standard poodle.
Some of these breeds I can see banning (although I certainly don't agree) ,but the Standard Poodle? Shiba Inu?
I wasn't aware of any temperment issues or snappiness in either breed. Can anyone think of a reason for those two to be banned?

And I don't know how anyone can say they don't agree but say that they can see why certain breeds would be banned.

There should be no understanding of breed bans. It's ignorance that causes breed bans. It's a want to control crap and put a band-aid on a problem that has NOTHING TO DO with the dogs themselves and EVERYTHING to do with the owners.

Unfortunately when you rent options are not very good. I can't imagine trying to rent with a pit bull here.

Your apartment is less strict than mine- no breed bans, but all dogs must be 20 lbs or smaller.

It's not just big dogs though, I was told a Great Dane or Irish Wolfhound would be acceptable
Chewbacca: What I meant was that there were breeds I expected to be banned, as soon as I heard there were "breed restrictions" simplly because they are so commonly banned. I didn't mean that there was anything wrong with the breed itself.

hmm, actually the only dog that has ever bitten my dog has been a s poodle. With the DD thing there are a lot of badly bred ones with poor temperment out there, just like the dalmaton (thank you 101 dalmations)
Shiba Inu's are generally very reserved dogs, someone that didn't recognise this could take them as "not liking people" or "having aggressive tendancies" the same applies to a lot of those breeds on that list.

Looks like a list they've had bad experiences with

I never realized how hard it is for most people to rent. I consider myself so lucky now. When I lived in an apartment it happened to be the first I looked at and there was no breed restrictions and also no limit to how many.

Wow, a wolfhound is acceptable? those things are Sight Hounds... i can only imagine what would happen in a small area like that if it saw something...

I can't fathom why these breeds are allowed yet the others not..

Though.. i guess Rhodesian Ridgebacks aren't that well known... Because they're never on a banned list... even a hotel we had to stay at said "yea, you can bring your dog" then they saw him...Though we had already paid... Ha..

You should certainly think a good bit on if you want to bring a dog into these areas... if they have a banned list for no other reason than they're dogs they don't like.. I'd be afraid of what else they'll enact as they see it.

There is a Dal ban here too.

Its a damage issue from101... too many cooped up Dals ate through walls, then snapped at people because they never got outside. Badly bred too.

How can you understand and still disagree? Its easy. You understand people are afraid of dogs, and lawsuits and eating through their walls. So they start to ban big, scary, or athletic dogs. Of course you disagree because I could walk a Dal 10mi a day, and in principal of course, but you know most people have no clue how to raise these dogs in confined spaces...

BWUAHAHAHAHAAAA

They don't have Filas on the list :D

I'm not suggesting you do it, but it sure is fun to think about ;)

Actually, Kharma would be a very easy dog to live with in an apartment. Hell, I could live in the CAR with her.

Frankly it sounds like the apartment management put together a list of dogs they are personally afraid of and/or had bad experiences with.

Alapahas aren't banned. Though I'm sure after the management met Teeny they quickly would be. LOL!

A few months before we found out Mom had cancer, we were looking at apartments. We'd found the perfect one, and mentioned we had dogs. The guy wanted to know what they looked like, so I popped out my phone, and the first one I showed was Doom.
The guy practically had a heart attack and wouldn't rent to us. He said big black dogs make people uncomfortable and he couldn't allow one in the freaking complex.

I was flippen LIVID. They also had a list about ten miles long with breeds that were not allowed. Fortunately the house we're looking at renting in Illinois doesn't have breed bans, or a payment if you have dogs. The guy that we would be renting it from (god willing) has nine of his own dogs, four dobies, two rotties, a sheltie, and two x breeds. And there's lots of yard space. :D

But it infuriates me that not only do they have restrictions, but then you have to PAY for your dog to be there. I understand a one time payment incase your dog destroys the walls or carpet or something, but having to pay MONTHLY is freaking ridiculous.

Of course Teeny is banned. She's one of them thur Pit Bulls
In order to keep a dog, I also have to put down a $100 nonreudable deposit and and additional $20 on the rent a month. It was $75+ 10 per month for Angry Puss.
It's a tough situation all around.

I had a hard time renting with the boys. No one wants a neurotic Border Collie in their rental. My current landlord lives across the street and has a Sheltie. She agreed to having the boys after meeting them a few times and seeing that they are well mannered.
