Some would maintain that it's not a "real terrier" unless the breed at some point was rumored to go to ground. The more hardlined would exclude animals who haven't the ability to fit down a stovepipe no matter what their ancestry.
For that matter Aires, wheatens, BRT, and do forth are fake terriers too, silly copy cats.

not necessarily, dales & pitties too, have gone into holes to pull out coyotes. the big true terriers like dales & wheatens were developed to be draw dogs not earth dogs. but they are still terriers in structure. the BRT is mostly giant schnauzerXdale so still terrier in structure.

I didn't day they're not terriers, I said I don't see them as quintessential terrier. I've met many many staffs, they're the number one breed in most parts of the UK. I can't speak for US bully types. Terrier to ME is something quite specific to ME.

I am going for Amstaff too. I had several different breeds before, like bulldog or also boxer. But since 4 years when i got my little Thor, i am defnetly voting for American Staffordshire terrier.

There were several wonderful SBTs at the trial I was at this weekend and be still my heart. They are just the coolest little dogs I've ever met. Little blocks of muscle with a pit head on one end and a wagging tail on the other - what more could one ask for?!

I would like to meet more staffies. They're the one terrier breed I could really see myself with. Maybe a good JRT. Not sure though.

I love staffords. I am more of a small dog person... I love big dogs, but I'd choose to own smaller dogs. My parents have a stafford and she is just lovely. I have to keep remembering that they are not really 'big' dogs, but they still feel like big dog. I don't know if that makes sense. I lovely the smaller type, personally, not those breed to be as large/chunky as possible.

I really like the JRT. I would consider them at some point as a future breed.

I love, love, love the look of the Glen of Imaal Terrier, but I've never met one.

Edit - I always consider Min Pin to be a bit terrier-like. Is this perception wrong?

Maybe it's because they look so similar to the Manchester Terrier? ;)

I'm so not suited to live with a Terrier, but if I had to pick, it would either be a Staffy, Border or Airedale. After working with Airedale rescue for a few years back in KC, they sort of grew on me, as well as making me adamant about never owning one. There were a couple I would have taken home in a heartbeat though. To this day, I remember Coffee (and not just because of his name).

Staffy bulls. The wee smiley darlings with the wiggly tails. Adore them.
