i just have strong feelings about reccommending a hunting breed to anyone who will not hunt it. doesn't mean they can't do the job or both jobs for that matter. and like i said if she came on looking for a feist in particular even though it wouldn't be hunted i'd still give her contact info for guys like Dick Bare & Bill Barger.

Definately a Pap. Ben was fantastic. I have never known a more driven and motivated dog. He was a difficult dog but WOW! What a worker. The bonus with Paps is that they are super light and don't generally suffer from joint issues.

Sorry, I didn't mean to make out that JRTs are 'difficult' dogs. I just worry that my experience level wouldn't suit some of the potentially more challenging aspects of the breed. I guess I would just have to meet some to see! I have always tended to put Min Pins in the same category as well without knowing that much about them I admit, but they are another breed I quite like. Paps and Shelties are breeds that I would consider and I wouldn't discount a rescue dog either.

We looked into Min Pins but the energy just didn't seem to fit. They are also very high energy and athletic dogs, but are really different in temperament than the paps. Cresties were the third breed we considered. I still really love them though the grooming/skin care kind of puts me off them.

My cousin has has JRTs all his life and I don't think you could pay him to take the papillons, lol. They just grate on his nerves with how busy they are. His current JRT seems to have a much better off switch than my crew. His dog is a lot harder and more tenacious than the paps, but less busy busy and in your face all the time. I guess it's a matter of preferences. He thinks my dogs are crazy. What does he say?... 'Weirdest dogs ever'.

The small dogs we compete with are usually a lot of shelties, corgis, papillons, and cocker spaniels (for small dogs). Then you also get the odd poodle, schnauzer (hmm wonder why LOL) chihuahua, as well as quite a few mutts that tear it up as well.

If you aren't choosing a dog to say, be competitive at the top level and go onto World championships I believe any dog can do agility.

Depends on what you mean by small but I would say a small female APBT (ADBA type) would fit the bill. I have seen several around 30-35lbs that would love that type of work.

How about a westie. I may be a tad biased, but they are great dogs. They are superfast, agile, and very trainable and one of the easier terriers. I am hoping to get teagan into Agility this fall/winter. They are very smart and can get ahead of themselves with trainging. They seem to read your mind of what you want them to do next and then do it before you ask them LOL. They also have the spunk and energy that makes them fantastic dogs for people with lots of energy to match!

I would pick either a JRT or Papillon.

Just because I love them. Their adorable and energetic/lively! :D And Harleigh is BFF's with a JRT... I want that dog so bad! :D

The alternative would be, don't laugh, a basset hound. Can you imagine how awesome it would look to see a basset hound doing agility? Strider's OB trainer did it, that dog wasn't fast, but she was VERY accurate. :)

my basset isn't fast in rally, but she's REALLY clean - she's only not been "in the ribbons" once, and NEVER had an NQ. and yes, she can jump! and loves to! the only reason we don't do agility and/or utility is that she's just a few weeks from being 10 years old, and I don't want to overdo it.

My personal choice would be a papillon - we have one in our club that does agility/obe and he's FANTASTIC.

I would first look at a papillon, and then a JRT.

I don't really think of corgis as small dogs- just medium dogs with little legs. :p

Most naked dogs are not great competitors. Naked bellies in particular are a bane of obed competitors. Having a small dog lie on a cold hard floor for 3 min can be particularly difficult.

Its not that they lack the ability, its that the lack of insulation against the sun or cold seems to be problematic.

That is a really good description. My JRTs are not busy at all. Even Kat (who is crazy) is not busy. They are hard, and tenacious. The whippets can be busy, you are right its a whole different energy.

(Dekka lies around and sleeps 99% of the time)

lol jasper solved that problem, when he lays down or sits he positions himself ON his legs, kind of half suspends himself just above the ground so his tummy/tush never touches the ground lol, he may look a little blonde but hes a smart cookie!
