Usually Brutus is such a sweetheart.( sorry this is long.) He had been so good the day before with the grandbaby and yesterday morning absolute sweetheart. So I decided to take him out to the pond for an early swim. Ok, we were fine. Stayed out with him a while and we came back in the house. One hour later he wants out. Take him out to go potty and then he rufuses to come back in the house. Tried a toy, cookie to no avail. Picked him and carried him in the house. He then starts racing through the house looks and me and my husband and pees on the floor. Put him back outside. Sat out with him. He decides he is going to the pond. I decide he is not. Went after him and made him sit. he was not happy. Brought him back to the house area. He then pulls the volley ball net off the pool and is running with it. I took it away and put it up. Put him back in the house. Once again running romping and stomping. Looks at us and pees again. Put him out again, stayed out but ingnored him. Finally he calmed down and i did play tug of war, and after a while did take him to the pond. Went to come in the house again, He refuses again. Went to pick him up, he lays on his back gets a wild look in his eye, growls at me and is trying to chew on my wrist, hard. By this time I am tired, sweaty and disgusted. Reached around and grabbed the scruf of his neck and shook it and told him no. Carried him in again. Again he comes in and pees. Took him out again. I was losing the battle no matter what. Stayed out with him. Let him play by himself. Any Ideas if this happens again?

First, you've just had a head on with the infamous Fila stubbornness.

Now, Brutus has learned that if he pees in the floor he gets to go back outside . . . he's doing a great job of training you! They are manipulative little beasts . . .

When you have to go retrieve him, the fun is over. He gets banished. No one pays the least bit of attention to him at all. Brutus just doesn't exist. When banishment time is over, though, call him to you. He'll fall all over himself to get to you and you can make a HUGE deal out of having him come on call. Run him through some of his obedience, i.e. sit, lie down and make a big fuss over him. Practice by going into another room and calling him to you, and when your husband is home the two of you can go into different rooms and call him back and forth.

As far as the peeing goes, well, once he's peed it's done, so unless he stops mid-stream there's no future in putting him outside - that just rewards him by getting you to do what he wants - let him outside to play. If you do take him out, clip that leash on him and don't let him play. Give him a chance to pee. If he does, you can praise him and walk around outside on the leash for a few minutes so he doesn't get the idea that once he's peed he has to go back inside immediately.

These dogs will test you when they're pups - just like a kid will. You've got to stay ahead of them because they will plot to get what they want!

Believe it or not he is perfect today barking to go outside and pee. Calling when I come. Did yours ever show this much agression. Did I handle that part ok. I do not believe in hitting a dog but usually I grab(not hard) the scruff and shake it alittle and do the no thing. This has always worked on the other dogs. I usually works on him too. Just never did show the cujo side of him before.
I know he was peeing out of spite, he did stop in mid stream. I swear Brutus can actually pee on demand.I have never seen him so hyper and destructive. Finally that evening he calmed down and decided he was going to be loving again. Hubby took him to the pond and played with him. He was trying to eat some weeds by the fence yesterday. After this is when it all changed. Could this have been the problem.

I don't think the weed was the problem, lol! They take spells of obstinance when they're pups. Mine had to learn about THE SWITCH, lol! All it took was one little flick on the back of the legs and both grrrrls stop what they're doing and come running when they hear me say "don't make me cut a switch!" Except when Kharma's herding . . . nothing gets through to her then. She can't stop herself until all the cows are in one place . . .

One thing too, Filas are vocal dogs and they will make all sorts of noises - even sounding like Chewbacca from Star Wars, lol!
