Today, I told my mother a few stories about dog food and how a dog’s life can be greatly affected by it. I told her Tessa's two stories about her dogs: tumors quit growing and another dog's seizers were not occurring has frequent. I told her these results were made simply by switching their food to a better quality. She was amazed. Yay! :) I've made at least two or three threads about dog food in this forum in the past, and you all helped me realize that the food that we are currently feeding, even though it was given to us by our vet, is a horrible quality food. I told her that if we start feeding a good quality of dog food, we would be able to feed them a lot less; therefore we wouldn't go through a bag so quickly. She was all for that. :) ALSO, as some of you may know from another thread... my llewellin setter recently got glaucoma in one eye and possibly a deep ear infection. She has been on pills for about 2 weeks, and she was given 2 shots at her appointment. She's a little better, but I'm hoping that changing her dog food would help even more. My mother is now all for getting new, good quality, dog food. I'm excited! :) My dad... well he just wanted the cheap stuff in large quantities.

Alrighty, I'd really appreciate it if some of you could help me one more time on this subject. Please find me a GOOD QUALITY bag of dog food that has at least 35lbs in a bag and is no more than $30. Also, it has to be something I can pick up at a store [petco or petsmart] and not have to order online [I don't want to pay outrageous shipping costs].

I'm thinking Nutro might be a good match [??], but I need to know if say a certain kind of Nutro is better than another. So please be specific.

Thank you all SO much. I love success, and we are almost there! :)

YAY!!!!!!

Hmm.. well, its really hard for us to say what the price will be, as I'm certainly not in your area.

Innova (Evo)
California Natural
Natural Balance
Canidae
Eagle Pack
Solid Gold
Nutro Natural Choice or Nutro Ultra(NOT Nutro Max)
Blue Buffalo

There's just a list I came up with off of the top of my head.

Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul (yes, that's the name of the food)is a very good quality food and is similar to Canidae. The cost is probably going to run you a tad more than $30 but not much more. My Natural Balance which I feed my Doberman is about $43.00 a bag for 30LBS. It will vary a little depending on where you live. Natural Choice by Nutro is not the best but is certainly better than the grocery store brands. Tessa mentioned some good brands too that you can check for. Good luck.

I just recently bought a bag of Canidae for 40lbs for $28.80 :D It depends on your area, your store, and sales that may or may not be going on ;) I'd check out some of the brands Tessa and Dober suggested, compare ingredients and prices and decide whats best...

Congrats on convincing your Mom
I hope your dog's health improves after being on some good food.
Oh, and just out of curiosity, what are you currently feeding ??

The easiest to find would probably be the Natural Balance at Petco, followed by Nutro at Petsmart. I'd try to find Canidae if possible...actually if you can find it I'd try Innova. It's what I feed my dog and he does wonderful on it.

Yeah, you can actually get better quality than Nutro for a better price, if you can believe it. Canidae is an excellent food, much better than Nutro, and people have found good deals on it. Chicken Soup for The Dog Lover's Soul is another food that beats Nutro in quality, and it's priced more reasonably. And if you wanted to go top of the line in quality, check out Innova...it tends to be priced higher, but you will feed much less, and the price does tend to become a very relative thing. Innova is really the best, in my opinion, but Chicken Soup, Canidae, Natural Balance, and Eagle Pack are also excellent foods, at lower prices than the Innova.

I feed Evo, but if you can't get Innova or other foods like that do you have a cosco in your area? The Kirkland food that they sell is way better then ANYTHING at Petco or Petsmart and is probably half of what you want to spend

Don't just focus on the price tag. You will need to feed much less of innova or canidae than even nutro, so in the end even if the bag is more expensive, it will last much longer. A 33lb bag of innova lasts over a month for my two, and they are 50lb and 85lb.

Thanks so much for all of the replies from everyone!

My dad has been buying Exceed from Sam's for the last... 10 years[??], but a few weeks ago... our vet started selling dog food, and we bought 2 bags of it. This food is Black Gold Performance. Real cheap [because of quality]: $17 a bag for 50lbs. Here's the link on it: http://www.chazhound.com/forums/showthread.php?t=42381

ALRIGHTY! I'M GETTING SOMEWHERE! :)

This is what I have found:
Petco...
Natural Balance Ultra Premium $32.99 for 35lbs
Eagle Pack Holistic Select $35.99 for 30lbs
Solid Gold Adult Maintenance $37.04 for 33lbs
Nutro Natural Choice Ultra $37.07 for 35lbs
PetSmart...
Blue Buffalo $39.99 for 30lbs

With Tessa's help I believe that I've narrowed it down to the Natural Balance Ultra Premium Dog Food. It seems to have the best quality out of the list at Petco, and for a pretty good price [which my parents will like]. Does everyone here agree?

Tomorrow, I'm going to call a trainer here in town that I know sells Innova. I'll check for prices. If it is expensive, then I know my parents won't go for that. It if it reasonable, then that will probably be what I end up with.

Well, I pay $45 for a 33lb bag of Innova Adult, but it lasts me almost 2 months for a fairly active 55 pound dog.
