Kassie had her yearly appointment today. I told the vet about her seperation anxiety that has skyrocketed since we lost Boomer. For now, she's not left alone for long, comes to work with me, but if I leave her for a bit, she freaks out, she sounds like a dog in pain, it's not just plain cries. I worry because we have to leave them for a day in March and even though we have a sitter who's going to check in on them, I worry about Kassie. The vet suggested Xanax, at a very low dose ( she's 11 years old and as of this morning weighs 3 pound 8 ounces) and prescribed 6. I decided to give her one today, 2 hours ago, just to make sure I can keep an eye one her for her first time. I thought it would mellow her down, but insted it made her hyper. She's stumbling all over the place and just wants to investigate everything or play and won't stand still. Because she's off balance, I have to try and confine her because she doesn't have any fear, she'd fall right off the couch if I'd let her, poor girl. I called the vet and they said the stumbling is normal, but the hyperness is unusual, but the effects should wear off after 4 to 5 hours. And that next time to cut the pill in half. Anyone hear of a dog getting hyper on Xanax before?
