Would your dog protect you?

ya well... call it what you want.

I remember one time when Brian and I had to live apart for a year, Teddy lived with me up in Canada. We lived in an apartment kind of close to the university campus and there were woods behind the apartment and taht is where we would take our long walks. Now in that area there have been more rapes reported than anywhere else in the city so this was never an area I would walk in at night or even during the day if I didn't have Teddy with me as a deterent.

Most of the time we walked WAAAY back in the woods where there wasn't a lot of traffic (mostly bikes) so that Teddy could be on an extended lead and explore without us being in people's way.

Well one day we were walking back in the woods and this guy came running out of the bushes out of NOWHERE. Looking back now I don't know if he was REALLY after me or if perhaps he was back there smoking a little something and didn't want to get caught (he kind of acted like he was jogging but his shoes were those kind that kids tuck the laces in and loosen then up so they just slip on and off (YES I notice these things. I could still tell you exactly what he was wearing) and I don't know anyone that jogs in shoes that don't stay on your feet. anywho...

So he came running out of the brush and he really startled me because I didn't see him before hand and heard no indication that he was coming up the path (AGAIN I was always on high alert when walking in that area and you can hear foot pounding coming up the dirt footpath) He came running out and was only inches away from Teddy before he noticed that I had a dog. Teddy immediately tensed up. the guy kept trying to go around Teddy and Teddy would cut him off. So I asked the guy to give me a second to reel in the lead but the guy just kept trying to get around Teddy. finally he thought he had faked Tedy out and ran around him. Teddy turned and grabbed the sleeve of the guys sweater. he never laid a tooth on but just held firm to his sweater until the guy stopped advancing. The guy stopped and at that point Teddy came to me as we moved to the side and the guy passed but Teddy watched him that entire time. As the guy passed he didn't so much as even glance at me. he kept his eyes on the ground and went on his way (perhaps another indication that he was smoking something he shouldn't have been)

Teddy did NOT bite him and made no attempt to. He grabbed the baggiest part of the guys sleeve and just held firm and that was it.

God I miss that dog

Wow Sparks !!! Even though I don't think any of my Goldens would have attacked , two of mine saved my kids twice ! One from a creek and one from the road . The creek situation was one golden staying with her and the other came back to alert me . The road one , Amy said she was going to the gate to get our paper , but instead went to the mail box which was across the road . I sent her brother on bike to check . Sure enough , she was about to cross the road . Later I found out that Rufus was standing in the middle of road and cars slowed down . I still shake at what could have happened ! We lived in the country , and back then life was different . Believe me , I would be more careful today !

Annie, I'm not so sure of. She's my wife's pet, and a hell of a tracker, but I doubt she has the nerve for real protection.

My boy Ty would protect me no doubt, protection is what he was bred to do, what he was trained to do, and what he lives to do. He has protected my wife and I before, and I'm sure he'll do it again. I've had many people tell me that the way he looks not at them, but into them them makes them very nervous. The funny part is, he's the most stable dog I've ever met. I love this dog.

edit- Please, I don't need a lecture about my responsibilities to my dog. I know what they are. I am completely loyal to him, and would give anything for him.

It just feels good to know that he would do the same.

I don't really know about Samm..I know our other two dogs Max and Jax would for they have been put in those kinda situations before..I'd like to say Samm would, but truthfully I don't know. She has growled before at people who have come too close to me, but she usually only does this to people who have somekinda odd visual thing on. Like a guys with a huge hat or someone with a bike..I think she would actually now that I think about it..but lets hope I never have to find out o.o

I dont know. I think Scout and Mo would but never had a situation for them to protect me.
But today I was walking into the kitchen and saw some people on my porch, remembered the door was open and Mo was inside I ran relling DONT COME IN THE YARD!!! MO MO Because I knew he would start barking, i was pissed at the people. I got mo back and closed the door part way and told them that is WHY I have the beware of dog sign on the gate!! The man said sorry and went on to ask me if I wanted to do any home improvements! UH No!!! They never shut up and kept talking! I hate when people dont listen to signs and just come on your property without permission.
You think if he got bit it would get into trouble even though I had a sign up warning them and a gate?

no, probably not. If your gate is not LOCKED, likely you would be the one in trouble.

In most places a sign stating beware of dog is nothing but an admission of liability in court.

As most of this thread states, the vast majority of dogs might put on a good show, but would not defend or protect anyone with force in a real life situation.
