For the puppy I'm getting, I'm just curious. Do you think this would be a good confinement area?

(I couldnt help but add the Kong toy LOL)

The size of the whole area would be maybe 3feet x 3feet?
(The GRAY is the confinement area. The peach is... the floor?)

I'm with Gallien_Jacks. Why are you teaching the dog to potty in the house? Why don't you just teach him/her to go outside? It saves headaches later to teach him now what you expect him to know later.

If you teach her to go in the housem you will not get her to change her habbit later, start as you mean to go on!

Yeah. I'm going to make sure I can get him on a Friday so that for the whole weekend I'll be able to supervise and take it out every hour.

I am not sure what your goal is here. Are you planning on having your dog potty inside the rest of his life? Or are you planning on him learning how to potty outside when he's older?

The dirt would jsut make the scent of whatever accidents he has inside stick and be even MORE apparent. If you train from day ONE that he potties outside he will be less confused down the line.

Outside when he's older. Right now in NY its prettyy cold, and I'm a little worried he might catch a cold. So generally, while he's a puppy, every hour I'm going to try and take him out. But sometimes he's going to be left home alone, and we just want to make sure that he learns to go on the mat and no where else.

Problem is that may or may not happen. When i was considering getting a very small dog and possibly litter box training it - i kept hearing that if you allow a dog to go inside your home ANYWHERE inside the home then it will consider yoru apartment it's litter box.

It's better to properly crate train, then take dog outside to potty. If you are worried that he will get sick you can carry him outside then set him down in an area outside when he's done pick him back up and take him back upstairs. This way he knows he's to go outside... not that sometimes it's okay to go inside l.. but sometimes it's not.

Even letting a dog go once in your house, will mean they think its ok, and will never be fully house trained in the future

Actually, that diagram shows exactly what Ian Dunbar recommends in his book to set up as a long term confinement area for a young puppy, if it has to spend time alone without being taken outside for potty breaks frequently enough.

It's not a bad idea at all, as long as you use something for the potty area that is closest to what the dog will be using outside, e.g. a concrete tile or a piece of (real, not artificial) turf. Don't use "puppy pads" or newspapers, they send the wrong message.

I still recommend getting that book by the way. It's going to be an immense help with raising, training and most importantly socializing a puppy properly.

just a note on the litterbox training...my 2 chis are 100% potty trained to a litterbox, they NEVER go anywhere BUT a peepad in the litterbox if the box is moved they come to me and tell me that its not in its regular place...

ill admit i much prefer a dog to potty outside however in the situation im in its just not feesable for them to be ONLY outside potty dogs, between the connecticut winters, and the weekends on the sailboat, theres no lawn on a sailboat...so it worked well for us...and they will go only in their box (on their pad if we dont take the box) but NEVER have accidents in the house or at frineds houses or while out or on the boat...so while it has to be done with the same consistency of regular housebraking it is possible to box train a dog sucessfully...box training does NOT automatically mean they will see the whole house as a potty...
if it makes any difference at all they were also NEVER crate trained.
i got vixie at 6months old, she'd never seen any kind of formal potty training, the breeder had a doggy door to their potty area...she was in my home 2 days and was 100% reliably using the box, and ive never had a single accidnet with her...
dodger was 4 months when i got him, he too had never seen a potty pad the brreder used newspaper to line the pen his litter was in for ease...we came in, i took him to the kitches where the box is and put him down, he sniffed whent in and pooped and hes been 100% reliable since that day...

just like teaching the dog ONLY outside my chis know ONLY on the peepad. if the pee pad is in the box they go in the box, if the peepad is on hardwood floor they go on the pad, if the pad is on carpet they go on the pad...even my intact male who lifts his leg to pee stands on the center of the pad and pees directly in the center.
they know that the pad is the equivalent of grass (or outside) for an outside trained dog...

as for the origional set up question, looks like its set up about right for those tiems when hes going to be alone for along while...if your planning on having him as an outside potty only dog then your realy gonna have to work hard those days while your there and then try to increase the time between outside without accidents...i agree that it is best to start off the way you want to go on...but sometimes its just not possible...ie when everyone works...

I know you want to train your pup properly, but by taking him outside to go pee/poop and also having the mat inside may send mixed signals as to what is right. How old will the pup be when you get him? How long would you have to leave the up alone?
