What? I like fluffy dogs. So what do you think the worst shedder is?

For their size: Poms.
GSDs are really surprising for their normal coat length, but by volume a husky is probably a bit worse.

Malamutes maybe, but there are bigger dogs, Newf?

Other votes?

(and yes, the short haired dogs are crazy in their own non- fluffy way)

Kuvasz. I'm not even joking. The eukanuba announcer even acknowledged that they're the worst shedders. The sheer volume is unmatched by ANYTHING I have EVER seen before, and it's year round. It's like giant snowdrifts of dog hair wafting across the house and that's with a wood floor and daily vacuuming.

It's approximately 5 bajillion times worse than a GSD, 9 collies (yes, 9 collies at once, in addition to the GSD) and 4 cats.

I don't even want to imagine it on carpet. *shudders*

Well, we stayed at a friend's house the past few days and she has a short haired Lab mix. At the end of the week, it was *our* dogs' hair making dust bunnies all around the house. So embarrassing. They literally just had a bath and blow out, too. I can sweep our house every other day and it will still look like I haven't touched it a day later. (I refuse to sweep daily.) I've also found hair in our butter tub. Don't know how.

I think the worst dog I've ever had to deal with shedding wise was a border collie/chow mix I dog sat. Black hair EVERYWHERE. The Malamute I had growing up didn't even compare to its furballs.

Although, I don't know if this is confirmation bias or what but people who don't brush their labs/goldens regularly, there is a SMELL, a very specific retrieving breed smell that comes with the coat/shedding and it's pretty gross.

I've met plenty a clean well brushed retriever that didn't smell at all..

but if you work with dogs you know what I mean when I say you KNOW when a pet lab comes in and their owners don't brush it because it's the snowfall of coat, and the smell/greasy feeling on your hands.

so the combo makes it the worst for me.

Our Golden growing up shed a ton, but we never bathed her or brushed her. And she always smelled. After you pet her, you had to wash your hands, gross smell left and oily residue.

I have to say I was shocked at how much the Pugs I used to dogsit shed. Like insane amounts. They were black ones. I would clean the kitchen floor and then like 3 hours later it was halfway covered again!

My uncles Husky was pretty bad- clumps of hair were always everywhere.

Retrievers do have oily coats, and can smell worse when nut brushed regularly, but they're still dust bunny lightweights.

I have more Buster bunnies roaming the house than Ruby ones.

My husky wins. His hair can re coat the floor in hair just as fast as I can brush it up. lol

I've finally gave up on the area around his crate. There will always be clumps of hair around his cage no matter how many times a day I pick them up.

The worst shedders are the ones whose owners call for an appointment and say their dogs aren't shedding at all, then get confused when we tell them their dog is packed full of undercoat and need a pricey deshedding treatment lol

Best examples are longer-haired double coats like Poms, fuzzy goldens, malamutes, and (omg) long-haired huskies, GSDs, Akitas, etc. The normal coated huskies, GSDs, Akitas, etc are pretty awful as well, but their problem is obvious from a mile away, even to their people (usually).

Do any of you guys know of a over the counter deshedding treatment that I can use on my folks dog? She is shedding horribly and I think she needs some help getting rod of her under coat. I brush her almost every day and every day I get tons and tons of hair off her.

Leonbergers are the biggest shedders I've come across. The only black mark on an otherwise perfect breed :D

For the record, kuvasz are at least 25x worse than akitas. My brother has a long coated akita and his shedding seems nonexistent compared to a kuvasz.

This is how I feel about kuvasz. lol. If they came in ANY color other than white, it would be okay. Or if they had a different coat type. Both traits together is pretty awful around here where it rains all the time.

Haha. I guess we're looking at it from two different perspectives - shedding hairballs all over the house vs. a groomer's perspective for getting all the undercoat out at once. As a groomer of almost 10 years, I stand by my statement. Your statement backs up my statement, though - the long haired Akitas (and shepherds, and huskies, etc) DON'T seem to shed a ton, because all the undercoat just gets stuck in there... but it's all in there, and it does need to come out, so my job is 10x harder. I have a couple long haired Akita clients, and next to my standard coated Akita, they wouldn't be terrible in-house shedders at all. If I don't keep up with his coat, he leaves furballs all over my house. But at least he keeps his hair to himself between coat blows, unlike Labs and the like, that just seem to leave hairy imprints everywhere, every day lol

I was really surprised at how much sloughed off the kuvasz daily because her coat is *very* similar in texture and length to my brother's akita. Ranger (the akita) only blew his coat twice a year though. Other than that shedding was minimal. Katalin created massive drifting herds of dust buffalo daily. lol

ETA: Maybe they have similar shedding levels, but something about the kuvasz coat allows the undercoat to escape on a daily basis. lol
