Generally that swelling is par for the course but I hope someone who knows more will chime in.

I know the surgeon was specific about not wanting ANY swelling for Bailey's leg but hers was a very different situation. Can you send the picture to your vet?

What meds is she on? This was on Thursday night right, from your other thread? I think if she was my dog I would probably bring her in for a quick recheck or like Springer said, see if you can send the vet pictures.

    cephalexin 250mg every 12 hours
    rimadyl 75mg 1/2 tab 12 hrs
My daughter in law is going to take the babies to her sister in the morning. IF it looks like it does now and doens't seem to have gone down any I may be going for a second opinion. This place says "you need to have an appt." EVen just to look see for 2 seconds and tell me if it is ok or not. I am just not use to that and since they did the surgery I would think they would say bring her right in if it was swelling..anyway this isn't even the vet that did the surgery and I don't know this man, and he took two seconds to cut the bandage, and put a bitty bit of tape on top. It didn't make me feel secure that it was ok. I know I am a grand worrier. I just would have felt a lot better if he had rewrapped the splint and looked at the wound. Zoom suggested she kept it elevated..so we are doing this..she looks happy but it isnt' a smile. She has unhappy ears when she sits up and blinks her code to me. She's being very good about not licking it.

I'd call and ask if you should be worried about swelling. I wouldn't be terribly worried, especially if she is due to go in Thursday anyway. When I had my cast, I know I had some swelling going on due to it.

I just don't want the bandage to be too tight and have it interfere with circulation. That's my concern. I don't know if it's like when you have been on your feet too long and you take your shoes off and then your feet swell. Just seems odd that it would swell now.

How is Pepper's foot this morning? I wish they would have told you if swelling is normal or not. I'm a worrier too. I don't want there to be an infection of any kind.

THe bandage was too tight. I am just horrified. The vet, the good one, the one I LIKE was back in today. She used some kind of light on it, put antibiotic powder on it, rewrapped it, gave me more pain pills for her, and she is to go back Saturday to get the stitches out. IN the meantime I am to gently massage her toes and apply ice. It was where the other vet wrapped it around her elbow. This vet didnt' have it that way on the original dressing, and it's not like that now. Eventually the rock of worry will loosen in my chest. I was scared it was going to keep her foot from healing and or worse. We spent a long night keeping it up in the air. I didn't know what else to do. I was so close to taking the dressing off...because I felt that was what was wrong, she didnt' have a temp, it didn't smell, it wasn't draining..I just felt in my heart it was too tight, but when he cut a slit in the bottom and declared it good, Ia m not a vet, I didn't know what to do.

SHe will walk on it now and the pain look is not in her eyes and her ears. I don't know how else to put it in words, but she holds her ears a certain way when she has discomfort. She doens't cry or whine, I am so grateful we got in first thing this morning.

Pepper says pink is no better than green and green was no better than tan with red stripes. now she has cold toes to boot. SHe is not a happy camper can you tell?

Pepper, I'm so glad you are going to get better and saw the original vet. Hugs & kisses are being sent your way as well as healing vibes.

Smkie, I knew your intuition was right about the bandage. I'm glad you got her in and the original vet saw her. Hugs.

She woke up from her nap tongue flicking, her ears flat back on her skull, biting at her leg like it was biting her. I grabbed the keys and raced back.I didn't know what was hurting but she can't go like this! By the time we got there, it's about a 15 minute ride, she had simmered down, and by the time the vet saw her, it was better yet. THe vet said, "you know when you cross your legs too long and your foot goes to sleep?" That made sense, and she is acting much more herself now. How it felt must have scared her, because she scared me. Hopefully we can get down to the business of healing now. I am so sorry that too tight bandage made what already hurt, hurt worse. I got her a bag of puff corn on the way home, because she loves puff corn and she so deserves it. It took her leg a long time to wake up.:(:(:( Her toes look much more normal now.

Pepper says Thank you Barab. SHe would lick you if she could.

It may be because they left her toes out. Maybe it's just veterinarian preference for wrapping technique. We always have to wrap over the toes. When dogs have chewed their bandages, etc it seems their toes swell.

The bandage was too tight at the elbow where the other vet wrapped it. 6 hours later after it "woke up" she is resting much better and the worry is gone from her brow. She says this chair has a broke in cushion in just the right place.

SHe's a whole different dog this morning. Back to herself. HORRAY. STitches come out Sat. I don't have the heart to tell her 5 more weeks of the splint. We gave that racoon a scare of his life from the window last night. Hopefully he will take a hint. 3 dogs barking at me, and one human roaring ...lets just say he ought to take the hint.
