The 72 hours thing is very standard in most shelters. If you don't reclaim the dog in 72 hours then they can put it up for adoption (and doing so would spay it).

But it's a pretty confusing article to me. When were the dogs picked up by the shelter?

Why didn't she go down to the shelter as soon as she saw the photo?!

The shelter held the dogs for the required time period for strays and then spayed to ready them for adoption. That's all on the up and up. The 72 hour hold is pretty standard and the dog owner shouldn't have relied on phone calls - I know if my dogs were missing and I saw them on a shelter website I'd be down at the shelter at light speed.

I may have yelled at my computer screen when she said her dog knows she can't have puppies anymore and that's why she's sad right after she let the nursing bitch lunge at the other dog from her tiny, bedding-less crate. Grrr.

I can't imagine seeing my dogs on a shelter website and thinking "oh I'll just call and leave a message maybe they can get back to me eventually."
I'd be in my car and heading to the shelter.

And I'd assume anyone breeding their dogs would do the same. Especially since the one was "very pregnant."

The woman sounds like a dolt. And it makes me sad that I have a hunch that the spayed bitch will show back up at that shelter again because she's no longer worth anything to the woman.

while I don't think any dog is depressed because it can't have puppies and they know it after they are spayed, and that does leave me a little uneasy about the mentality of the owner, I can say I'd be more than pissed if I was in a similar situation.

The dogs came up on Saturday, she saw them on Saturday and called, it's not clear what really happened after that. Was it the end of the day, was the shelter closed, was she out of town? It said they were moving from the country to the city, was there an issue with that? I don't know, i just know that contact was made. They were then closed Sunday and Monday. I don't know what this particular shelter was like, but I can say i've never really had positive experiences with shelters.

Once there was a bulletin for a lost GSD in WI, I saw it on my way to work and it said to call the shelter and I did. Funny story, when I pulled over and got out, I locked my **** keys in my car with it running :) and it was winter. Then I had to call a tow truck to come unlock my door. anyway, I called multiple times and left multiple messages and it took 2 freakin days to get a call back. I had long worked my own resources and GSD networks to notify the person who lost their dog where I last saw it.

Anyway, long story short, limited experiences, but none have been stellar examples of being on top of things for whatever reason. So who knows what happened here on that Saturday, but to be closed the next 2 days and when the owner shows up Tuesday afternoon, the dog has been already spayed that morning?

My guess is they were pissed the woman had one pregnant dog, deemed her irresponsible and decided to just make the decision for her. Not that I disagree it was probably the "right" decision, it wasn't their's to make and that pisses me off.

I kinda agree with RTH on this one. I worked at a kill shelter some time ago, I think it was shelter policy that if they found your dog running loose, it gets neutered before you get it back or you don't get it back. Not sure this was legal. There was a yellow mutt picked up and the owner refused to allow a spay and he didn't get her back. I think she was adopted to someone else. Some shelters are screwed up.

One of my Mom's favourite things to say springs to mind, "Shoulda, woulda, coulda..." Why did she wait until she saw the pictures posted on the website? It sounds like the pictures were posted on the shelter's adoption page. By Tuesday morning the 72 hours had passed, they left a message informing her of that.

Two mix breeds, one with puppies, in a crowded shelter. No identification but somebody calling and leaving a message that they were her dogs. They called back and left a message but she's upset she wasn't given until Tuesday afternoon? Really? How was the shelter to know they really were her dogs? Because she said so on a voicemail?

I do realize that some people view their puppy bearing dogs as an investment rather than family members... And leaving a message rather than getting her tush down to the shelter to make sure her dogs were ok in person would suffice (like if I lost my bike or something). Oh, nevermind, that train of thought makes my brain pop a little bit.

Let me get this straight though, they're keeping Whiskey in the garage to keep her away from Charlie's pups. When she's brought in for the interview she gets too close to the crate with the new mother and the pups, so Charlie, naturally, lunges. So the owner views Whiskey's demeanor as depression because she knows she can't have puppies anymore? Really? Why, because somebody told poor Whiskey she was sterile now and she cried? That would have been just mean.

It takes a few weeks for the hormones to leave her system, she doesn't know she can never have puppies. She knows she was uprooted from her home and put in a strange place. She was left alone long enough to dig out and escape from that place. She knows she was caught and put in a crate in ANOTHER place that smelled of strange people, dogs, and antiseptic. She knows she's sore, she knows she her companion lunged at her, she knows things aren't "right" because there are strangers around and her owner's ticked. Yeah, no doubt she's depressed. but over not being able to ever have puppies? That's the owner's issue, not hers. It sounds more like the owner's upset over lost income.

I don't think what the shelter did was right. It is up to the owner if they want to spay/neuter their dog. I chose to spay/neuter. Other people may not want to. It's their dog and it's their choice.

Personally, I'm of the 'I'm glad they spayed.' camp. Looking at the situation, a lot worse things could've happened to the dog beyond getting picked up and spayed.
