I've been looking into lots of grad schools... primarily ones offering clinical psychology, as that's what I'm interested in, and dentistry, as that's what my boyfriend is going into, and one of those is the University of Manitoba which is located in Winnipeg.

Neither of us have been to Winnipeg, although he's passed through when he's driven across Canada. So I'm just wondering how it is to live there or if anyone has visited and if they enjoyed it, since I'd rather hear it from real people versus from what I can find on google. Also would love to hear about what the dog community has to offer there since I'm planning on getting a Toller in either first year or second year. :)

Thank you in advance!

Been there a few times. Boyfriends' brother& sister-in-law live there.

It's called Winterpeg for a reason. They had a September wedding. It was like -4C& snowing. Soooooooo cold. Constantly cold.

Sis-in-law works at the university, says it is great place. Have three friends who traveled there for degrees& all three ADORED their time there :) I've never actually attended but I've been in the campus& it is nice! Not sure on the dog community but when we were considering relocating there, Garrets' brother found a local agility club (they live about ~15m from university so would be close to your location I'd assume) but I've no idea how good or anything! And I have no other interests other than agility so not sure on other sports/ training facilities!

Oh wow, -4 degrees in September! I do prefer colder weather over warmer weather though so I think I could definitely adjust to that. I'll definitely have to invest in some dog booties and a winter jacket though for the dog during the winter.

I'm glad to hear that they enjoyed their time there! I've never heard anything about it before actually searching around for clinical psychology programs but it seems really nice. I'll have to look into the agility program. :) I'll probably go with either flyball or agility, depending on which one best meshes with my schedule... unless the dog only likes one of those activities, which I couldn't imagine would be the case.

Thank you for your response, it was much appreciated!

I spend one spring/summer there when I was racing horses. There are tons of mosquitos, when I rains, it pours and they get lots of wind. But overall seemed like a nice place to live. I do think it really gets cold in the winter though and lots of snow. No help on the dog activities.

I lived there as a kid, so my memories are pretty kid centric (I went from grade 1-4 in winterpeg)

Things I remember

Cold. Seriously, I came from Ontario. This was shocking. I think ever year I trick or treated in a snow suit. One year I chose my winter coat so that would work as part of my costume.

You go shopping and there are places to plug your car in whilst you are in the mall. And everyone does.

Its flat. Reaaaalllly flat. Man made snow and ice covered slides were the only way to toboggan.

It was very warm in the summer and wow the mosquitoes. I don't remember as much about the summer as it felt to me pretty much the same as an Ontario summer. Hot and fantastic.

It sounds a bit like New Brunswick in some aspects. It's usually pretty cold where I live, although Winnipeg seems to have it beat in terms of when winter weather starts and when it ends. Lots of bugs too and not as much rain, but there's actually a lot of rain here where I go to school.

It sounds really nice overall though! Plus I've been reading that the cost of living isn't too bad there which would be a bonus since I'll be a graduate student and only have a part-time job... and hopefully some scholarships.

I have been to New Brunswick in the Winter. Winnipeg blows it out of the water when it comes to brutal cold. Like we are talking normal temps of -20C in the winter.

It is a nice city.
