Why would a dog jump on another dog in a pond?

OK, so I was at the dog park today (mistake - I went to one I never go to because it is WAY too small, one I usually go to usually has zero people in it) and got confrontational with a couple and their ill mannered Malamute.

I was throwing a ball into the pond for mine to fetch since she loves the water and then, BAM, stupid dog jumps into the pond and right on top of mine. This dog is probably 70lbs, mine is 40. The first time I thought it may have been an accident since some dogs get overzealous with toys in the pond. The second time it happened, I just lost it. I went over and told them that every time he jumps on mine he is giving my dog a bad experience and making it that much more likely that she will never want to step foot in a pond with other dogs around. They told me that "he's a puppy; 6 months old and he's just playing". I repeated what I said before and then idiot gets, literally, 4" from my face and tells me that she "comes here 5 days a week and you can just LEAVE!" OK, so I've established that she owns the park now.

At that point I really lost it and told her to pull her head out of her a$$ and read a freakin' book. Heck, get some COMMON SENSE. Her "playing puppy" could seriously injure my dog. After that I went to the empty small dog side so my dogs could get in some swim time. I ended up going back to the other side and seeing her dog jumping on other peoples' dogs too.

So, rant over, why in the heck would a dog feel any desire to purposely jump right on top of another swimming dog? Or is it just manners thing?

Yeah he was probably just excited and trying to play, but the owners :yikes: If someone was worried about what my dog was doing to theirs I would remove him from that dog's presence (unless I was there first and for some reason did not want to leave that area).

Sorry you had a bad day at the park, maybe going earlier would help to avoid "rush hours".

I went at around 1pm so there were only a total of 3-4 people out there. The entire large dog side is probably around 1.5-2 acres.

The couple just completely blew my mind when they couldn't even grasp what I was trying to tell them. They totally blew off my concerns and tried to make it my fault. Then I guess she was looking for a fight or something when she got right in my face.

I'm still in complete shock over how they responded to my concerns of my dog being injured and possibly afraid of ever going into the water again.

Also wanted to add that the dog wasn't particularly playful when he was outside of the water. But whenever he saw any dog in the pond he immediately jumped on top of them. Toy or no toy.

Uhhhh . . . sounds like a rude dog. *shrug*

Really, not something I would freak about. But I also deal with large groups of dogs daily so not much affects me anymore. Some poor guy at the flea market last week let his dog sniff Teeny (after asking if he could) and his dog snarked at her for sniffing his bum. The guy was HORRIFIED. I just shrugged and said "He didn't want her sniffing him there."

They're dogs. Crap happens. Some are rude. Some have hot-blooded owners. Some have owners who have no clue. I prefer to deal with dogs WITHOUT their owners, and thus stay away from dog parks.

Dogs drowned in water (I've seen a bulldog sink & drown). This dog has already broken her leg because a larger dog jumped on her. So maybe I'm already on edge about these things and it does freak me out when someone thinks it's OK to let their significantly larger dog jump on another while swimming.

I didn't want this thread to turn into a "stay away from dog parks" thread but I guess it's inevitable.

I think dogs probably jump on other dogs in the water for the same reason Harry insisted on jumping on top of us in the pool... because its fun. lol

Even worse, if we swam down to avoid him he'd swim around above us waiting for us to surface, he did learn manners though.

The owners sounds like effwits.

if my dog was doing that I would put him on a leash. I DO plan to get a long tracking lead [20ft maybe] for the dogs at the park. Even if only for the puppy.
