I thought I remembered hearing that cats rubbed on things they considered "theirs"... was I misinformed?

I really should look into it; I've been seriously planning on some clicker training with our 2 cats. :D

yeah I'd say it's probably scent marking. Although it's possible rolling in dirt has some coat benefit, though I'm just guessing on that.

cats rubbing is a method of scent marking...so rubbing against naything in general is their way of marking it as their own...

they will also rub in "scents" they like or to add scent ontop of strange scent...

our cats indoors only, but he loves to rolls and rub on shoes then come rub up against his favorite people. hes a freek.

My tabby is an indoor only cat. But he is constantly rolling around and rubbing on every person in the house. He is also my drooler.

I think its just scent marking. So pretty much your cat is saying "This is MY Human!".

Because they're cats. They can do anything they want. Explanations are for peons. Just ask them!
