which dog?

im new too these forums so hello everyone i am thinking about getting a dog (obviously) but i cant decide on which breed so i thought i would ask on here for some help deciding i want a dog that is short haired medium/large size, intelligent and can be trained well i want a dog that is energetic and needs/appreciates long walks ..i have only ever owned 2 dogs in the past one was a collie and the other was a boxer any ideas? ..i like the look of accolade boerboels but they are too exspensive lol

Would a Labrador Retreiver work? They are large insize, short hair, intelligent and can be trained well, and they are entergetic and could go jogging or whatever. Other breeds that come to mind are:
Vishla
Boxer
Australian Shepherd (if you can provide mental exercise as well as physical.)
And a Doberman Pinscher (that is only if you know how to control a dominanting dog and you have dog experience.)

But if you don't care about shedding, or protection, I think a Lab would be perfect for you.

Either one is a lovely dog. You have to be a little more on guard choosing a Lab, as they have become so popular over the years that they are a favorite money-machine for puppy mills and back yard breeders.

You might seriously consider looking into finding a dog through a breed rescue or your local animal shelter, and think about an adult dog. I've had some fabulous, wonderful companions that were adopted as adults.

Please consider rescue or the shelter! Especially with rescue, the dog has been evaluated and you know what you're getting moreso than with an overbred puppy. You could even sign up with a local rescue and foster a dog until it finds a good home. Then if you end up falling in love, you keep it! Will you give rescue a chance? If you like Boerboels (which I do too, they're beautiful) how about a Bullmastiff instead? Very similar looks, cheaper and more readily available. But then the exercise issue might be a problem.

thanks for all the replys i have been thinking about rehoming one from the local rspca but the only thing that puts me off is they come and visit you at home this wouldnt usually be a problem but i keep reptiles aswell and the rspca are totally against keeping rep as pets so im not sure whether they would let me rehome one what do u think?

Ask them. All they can tell you is no, which is the same answer you would get if you didn't go in the first place.

I agree....rescue would be a wonderful option. I have adopted many dogs with great results that way. Good luck!!!
