What's with the check mark thingies?

You know the checkmarks beside the usernames in posts? Why are some of them them blue and some white?

I think there may be a way to be logged in but still have it show that they are not on because I see people post multiple times within a short period and their button remains blue. Kind of like logging in as invisible with Yahoo or AIM. Anybody?

You can make yourself invisible here too - in your profile screen there is a checkbox or something for it. I don't see the point of it.
