What words do your dogs understand?

Discussion in 'Dogs - General Dog Chat' started by Backward_Cinderella, Apr 20, 2008.

  1. Ours all seem to understand some words...
    Yum yums (treats)
    Go byebye
    Go for a walk
    Park
    Eat
And in Doom's case - Fetch.

What words get a reaction out of your dogs? How do they react to them? How can you tell that they know what your talking about? My sister and I were talking about it earlier and I'm just curious about other dogs' reactions.

Hmmm. Outside of commands, Buddy knows (the others may know these as well):

    Breakfast
    Dinner
    Mommy
    Daddy
    Ball
    Dog Park
    Let's Go
    Cat

Erm... I feel like there should be more...

Anyways, Buddy goes NUTS for breakfast and dinner, it's too cute. We use mommy and daddy in contexts like, "go find mommy" or "where's mommy" or "go get mommy." Ball is Buddy's life so that's an obvious one for him. Dog park gets a really excited dance out of him (or used to, we haven't been in awhile), let's go, normally gets a skip in his step, it's really cute, lol. Cat, said like, "caaaat" means, the cat is being bad and he goes to tell him so. :D

  3. That is too funny!

I've broken Morgan's words into two categories... since he is still training on commands.

    Commands:
    Come Here
    Sit
    Lie Down
    Wait
    Stay
    Easy (ease off the leash)
    Leave it/Leave him alone
    Off

    Other words:
Good Boy (he LOVES hearing this)
Outside/Do you need to go outside? (ears perk up, he'll run to the door and poke it with his nose)
    Potty (cue to pee)
    Poop (cue to... well... poop)
Walk (he does a puppy dance)
    Park (more puppy dance)
    Ball (looks for a ball)
Doggy ("doggy" is his loofa dog, he'll usually go poke it with his nose, sometimes will bring it back to me)
Rope (same as "doggy", but with rope toy)
Bone (same as "doggy" or "rope")
Bowl (puppy dance, runs to where his bowls are)
    Are you hungry? (PUPPY DANCE!)
Ouch! (let go, game over, playing too rough)

There are probably more, but I just woke up. lol!

His name obviously, plus the usual obedience commands (sit, stay, come, heel, stand, down, wait, no, leave it - he knows these in both English and German)
And the tricks (paw, other paw, high 5, speak, "hup" which means to jump over whatever I'm pointing at)
    Go Potty
    Ball
    Toy
    Walk
    Bye bye
    Let's go
    Time to eat
    Go find John
    Easy
Food/treat/are you hungry?/are you ready to eat?
    Outside
    Inside
    Back up
    Move

    Sammy
His name and again, most obedience commands (sit, down, stay, wait, heel, come, leave it, no)
Quite a few tricks (turn light on/off, paw, other paw, high five, both paws, dance, sit up, spin, bang, roll over, crawl, and "arms" where he leaps into my arms)
    Let's go
    Walk
    Bye Bye or ride
Just a minute (which usually means, I'll walk you in just a minute)
    Bath
    Outside
    Inside

    Scooter
Only a few obedience commands so far (sit, down, stay, come, leave it)
    Let's go
    Outside
    Inside

    Marley
Same stuff Sammy knows, minus the tricks

    Juno
Not a whole lot yet, just her name and nicknames, let's go, and come (most of the time) are all we've mastered so far.

In addition to commands I don't think I could possibly list all the words that my dogs know and understand exactly what I am talking about.

They know and understand the names of every person in the house and regulars that come over. If I tell them to go see <insert name> they go directly to that person or attempt to locate them.

Orson knows the different names of his toys and when asked to bring a specific one, IE Wobbly Knobbly, he will bring THAT toy.......if you just say 'toy' he knows it's his choice and it's the first one he comes to, LOL

They understand "back door" as opposed to "front door" They know and understand all the basics.......walk, outside, inside, play, run, bath, eat, blah blah blah

The words/phrases that get the most reaction are:

Phoebe "Kitty Kitty" she gets very worked up because she LOVES to chase.

Orson is a tie between "Who's here, go see" and "Are you hungry?"

That I'm sure of other than commands:

    Mommy
    Daddy
    Upstairs
    Downstairs
    Park
    Din-din (food)
    Treat
    No
    Potty
    Out
    Hush
    Ride

    Commands:
    Sit
    Down
    Stay
    Away
Thank you (give it to me)
    Fetch
    Here
    Let's go
    Crate
    Spin
    Shake
    Ask Nicely (beg)
    Over
    Bow
    Leave it

I'm not really sure where the boundary for command/word is. "Let's go" is conversational, but she knows that's she's supposed to do something when I say it.

I could never list them all. My dogs, especially Millie, pick up on words and phrases in everyday life and teach themselves what it means. The same with body language, I couldn't list what hand/body signals they respond to, because they pick up on the major ones along with the subtle, usually inadvertently taught.

Cookie Wookie: means come to me and wag tail
Lets go + meet me at the door or gate.PUPPPPPPPPIEEEEEEES or Puppy puppy puppy= come to me
Meata ball said like that is Teddys command to come inside

WHAT DID YOU DO+ means somone did something wrong all hide/

Their name vs NO is like COZEMO stop what u r doing.

Works well for my breed vs basic obedience commands.
Plus give paw vs sit to get treat is better since we do show once in a moon.

    Happy voice means good guys
    No voice means you decide
Bad voice is back off to humans dogs will protect.
