for a dog that ate half of a cooked chicken leg bone?!

I was taking chicken bones to the garbage and Keira jumped up and grabbed one out of my hand. She only got half and I stuck my hand down her throat to try to get it out but she swallowed it whole. She's never done anything like that before and I was not expecting it at all. Never, ever has she stolen something from me before. Grr. And of course it had to be something that could be potentially dangerous.

I gave her slices of bread to hopefully cushion anything that might be sharp... but is there anything else I should do? Was that a bad idea? We've had dogs forever but none of them have ever eaten a cooked bone since I know those are dangerous so I don't know what to do. Ugh, I can't believe this happened. :( I hope she'll be ok. I can't believe she did that.

I called a vet and all they said was to watch her, but didn't really give any other advice.

Kaylee has gotten into so many cooked bones it's ridiculous. I feed her bread, watch her and keep an eye on her poops.

Duke is like Kaylee.

If there is a cooked bone that is ever available to him, he will eat it. He's never had any issues with them and they go through his system fine. I just do the same as linds and feed him bread and watch him closely.

This. Ozzy and Enzo some how busted open a locking trash can and ate the remains of a whole rotesserie cooked chicken. We gave them about half a loaf of bread each and they were fine. Watch her poop, but she should be just fine.

I'd just keep an eye on her. Likely she'll be just fine. Molly was a horrible scavenger and probably ate tons of cooked bones in her day.

What others have said, chances are she'll be absolutely fine, just keep an eye on her and watch her poops.

If it makes you feel better, my old boss's sister fed her dog cooked chicken bones for almost two years before I said something to her and she never had an issue.

Just for future reference. We treat chicken bones and remains like hazardous material...between Sophie and cats if there's something yummy in there, that garbage is going downnn. We keep the eaten bones in a sealed bag in the fridge and then on garbage day they go to the sealed can at the curb.

One bone and everything will probably be fine as long as it's not a super small doggie.

For pokey things I usually give bread and watch for any signs of illness..so far so good.

If it helps, we recently contacted the specialty referral center for a dog who had eaten a cooked rib bone. It was in the stomach. They said that they rarely if ever remove bones from the stomach because, as long as it stays in the stomach, they digest over time. It's when they pass into the intestines that they can cause issue. We re-xrayed several days later and it was, indeed, nearly digested.

Eve ate a whole cooked chicken carcass once with no issues. I agree with bread and keeping an eye on her.

Mine have gotten a couple chicken bones in their time. Just keep a close eye and do not hesitate to seek care if something seems wrong.

Thanks guys. Glad that most of you have experienced similar things and nothing bad happened. That's reassuring!

She's been such a brat this month and doing different things totally out of the ordinary. I don't know what's up. Nothing's changed in her life... guess she just feels like trying new things suddenly.

So far she seems perfectly normal but I'll continue to keep an eye on her for the next few days and hope nothing goes wrong. She thinks she had the best night ever. Ate a chicken bone, got lots of yummy bread, life is great!

:rofl1:

I've never had a dog eat a cooked bone, but I've always heard to give lots of bread and watch them as well.

I'm sure Keira will be fine! Lots and lots of vibes that the bone passes through without any issues!
