So... what is the worst dog food you've ever fed to your dog?

When we brought our first dog home, we bought a bag of Eukanuba. Soon after (before the bag was gone), I learned that Eukanuba isn't a high quality food, so I switched to Nutro Natural Choice. After a couple of small bags, I learned about Innova and bought that. And that's when I really started researching about pet foods.

We fed Alex (our Newf/GSD cross) Proplan. Makes me sad as he might have lived longer if we had known better.

Rosey was raised on Pedigree, and is changing to PC.

Worst food for her? Innova Evo. I almost lost her on that.

Lilly, our childhood dalmatian, was raised on Proplan and I think the same thing. She died at 10 from renal failure, and I always wonder if she would've lived longer had she been on a high quality food or raw.

Evo isn't a bad food, your dog just couldn't tolerate it. The whippets can't handle some good foods (can't keep weight on) doesn't make them crap though ;)

My chis did horrible on Innova (diarrhea, gas, vomiting)... we switched to Wellness after that, and they did great.

Innova was still a really good food... it just didn't work out well for my chis.

I've used the green Purina bag. And once or twice, Pedigree.
I had a Springer live to 13 on just whatever food we could feed- lived in an island in Alaska where the only dog food was found in grocery stores!
I'm always amazed that some dogs do great on some of the grocery store brands of foods or Purina and the like.
We feed all Kirkland Signature now except allergy dogs who get Natural Balance.

I always wonder the same thing about Nikki, too. She was on a lot of different things, but Bil Jac for a long time. I always wish I would've known better, maybe she would've been healthier, and lived longer

Shack lived his whole 13 years on Pedigree and was healthy as a horse (except his hips which was most likely genetic). Pete and JR were also on Pedigree. Rosie was on Science Diet and Eukanuba I believe. The other shelties were on Science Diet a long time then ProPlan a long time, then switched to some sort of other food.

We've pretty much used it all- Pedigree, Eukanuba, Science Diet, ProPlan, Canidae, Innova EVO, California Natural, Eagle Pack Holistics, Fromm, Orijen, Blue Buffalo, TOTW, raw... I'm probably forgetting some.

Canidae was really really bad for all our dogs. Like really bad...

Canidae is one of the few holistic foods we've never tried.

We've bought Innova, Innova EVO, Nature's Variety, Wellness, Taste of the Wild, Orijen, Acana, California Naturals (foster dog), Royal Canin (foster dog), Natural Balance (foster dog), Timberwolf Organics... I think that about covers it!

All 5 of our dogs have been on raw for the past few months and tolerate it really well. It's the first thing we've been able to feed all 5 of them! Before this, we were using Acana and Taste of the Wild fish formulas, but we had to feed Emma Wellness Puppy canned.

Pedigree. I fed that to her for a few weeks after I brought her home. Ick!

Then I started researching food more. She was pretty much raised on Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul (I seriously hate that name, lol), then we switched to Healthwise Active and then Acana Grasslands. She is now on RAW :)

Anyways, Pedigree is by far the worst one she's been fed.

Our family Golden was just fed crappy grocery store foods her whole life. Kibbles and Bits type of deal. She died at 10 and I do think that diet was a part of her getting so sickly so fast (she was really sick from age 7 and on).

Jackson has never really eaten crappy food. As a pup, he ate the Dog Whisperer puppy food (I know... but the ingredients were pretty good, it did contain grains, but no by products, soy, wheat or corn, and I think it was made by Castor & Pollux). He ate that puppy food from the time I got him at 9 weeks old and then maybe til he was about 5 months old. Then I put him on Merrick's Before Grain for a while. Then NV Instinct, and now Acana and Orijen. He's tried a bag or two, or some samples of other foods in between, like Wellness, Fromm, etc...

On occasion, I will give him Cesar wet food as a 'treat' mixed in with his dry food. If we're traveling, it's just easier than bringing cans if we don't have a fridge around, etc. I don't mind throwing away the little Cesar things, since they're only like .65 cents. So yeah, Cesar is probably the worst food he's fed.

I'm really not sure what Happy was fed 20+ years ago. Purina maybe?

My childhood Aussie was fed Pedigree her whole life - we just didn't know any better. I have to say she lived a great, long life though - even when we took her in to be PTS the girl at the desk couldn't believe how old she was and the reason we were there.

I also remember buying the JRT a few bags of Beneful, too, because our vet fed it! Just goes to show that what the vet says about nutrition or feeds isn't always the best (-cough- Science Diet). In her defense this was probably around 7 years ago and she's an incredible vet. We've used her for 20 years for our large and small animals.
