Confession. One of the reason I wasn't even really considering longhaired dogs was because of my love of beautiful collars.

In my case, it completely depends on the collar. I also have a "thing" for traditional or breed-specific collars. When I was considering a Mastino Napoletano (I still am, but decided last year wasn't the right timing for me just yet), I also fully intended to custom order one of these collars by Rex Davis that I've been told go into the quadruple digits.

I said "less than $30". That just seems reasonable to me, since what I look for is something nicer than cheap with some color and strength.

I have paid $80+ for a nice leather collar for Morgan... and I won't do it again. I LOOOOOVE the collar, but that is the problem. I love it so much that I rarely let Morgan wear it. I don't want him to mess it up. LOL!!!

In the end, though... 99.99999% of the time I just make his collars myself, so it's kinda moot. :p

I chose less than $250 because I have paid more than $100 for a collar (thanks Paco Collars, lol) and I'm sure I"ll do it at least once more. However, I don't think I"d pay more than $200 for a collar and I wouldn't even pay that amount more than once. Or so... that's what I'd like to think about myself hahaha

I chose under $75. The most I've spent on a collar thus far has been I think $40 for a custom Collar Mania embroidered martingale for Pentti. Any of Kimma's CM ones I got for free from contests! I love leather collars, but they won't show up too well under my guys' fur. Plus I would be afraid I would never even use them because I would be scared they would get dirty!

Now I did just buy a $45 twisted leather lead from onlead.biz and once Kimma gets another title (not sure if it will be in Rally or Agility) I will buy her a matching collar.... :p

Finkie.. the nice thing about leather is that its actually far easier to keep clean than anything with fabric. I will never go back to fabric as my dogs are too dirty to keep it looking clean, even the good ones. Leather however looks fantastic for years.

But then, I have a huge problem with going into dollar bins at Target, and such, and finding collars and being like "but it's only $1!!!11!!" LOL!!
I do not advise buying the dollar bin collars lol. Been there done that, took Lucy for a walk and then at one point realized, oh, the collar unsnapped. She doesn't pull, at all. So I put it back on her and then it unsnapped again.
Thankfully it was Lucy and not Juno lol because I know Lucy's not going anywhere if her collar comes off.

So yeah. The collar was CUTE but I guess there's a reason why it was only $1 :p

I get SOOO mad when I find really really cute collars and they use a plastic snap thing. Even more expensive ones on etsy..

So annoying! I just don't trust those plastic things.. seen far too many of them snap off of dogs at the WORST times

Oh I know! I always hated at school when we'd have these big, strong pit bulls being walked on 3/4" nylon collars with plastic quick-release snaps. I was always so, so worried they were going to bust out of their collars. But it's true, a lot of the super cute patterned collars are made with those snaps!

I test the plastic ones first. There are good plastic snaps that are very strong. If I can't pull or sharply tug one apart then my dogs won't be able to either.

LOL you're probably right.... I just feel like it WOULDN'T be that way, KWIM? :p

The other thing is that my guys need martingales and I don't like chain martingales... So that presents a problem there. I guess the closest thing I could get would just be a leather slip collar? (I don't want one permanently attached to a leash, either)

I have seen quite a few of the leather martingale/leash combos. I am sure you could find an all leather one. I don't use martingales (not even on the whippets) flat collars all the way.

Quick edit They do make them.. this one is pretty.

Ive gotten collars for 75-100 for our dogs. I put under $250. I just like good quality leather collars, if it's really really awesome leather, I'm willing to pay the price for the quality.

true! I don't walk Jax on a collar though, so it's not been an issue for us, but I definitely wouldn't trust them to hold if he happened to pull. Or heck, even like you said, not even pull - just unsnap, LOL. Don't trust them tho. They are just to look pretty and hang tags!

I have used mostly plastic snap collars for years and I've never had one unsnap, but once in the winter the plastic actually got cold enough on a walk to shatter with leash pressure, believe it or not. Must have nearly frozen. That was years ago with a pretty cheap collar, I'm more picky now when I get collars that have them.

The thing is I can't see (for leather.. you want to add solid gold, hand made conchos etc) the nicest leather costing more than 75 dollars for a small to med sized dog. I mean I know how much it costs to buy a hide, hubby used to do leather stuff, we still have the punches and stuff for leather tooling. Anyone selling collars for high high dollars and claiming its due to the leather is either swindling you or is being swindled themselves.
