I was wondering which dog breeds were considered to be aggressive here in the United States. I am having to relocate and some of the homes I am considering renting do not allow aggressive dogs. I have a Siberian Husky, he is 4 going on 5, he is a well mannered dog.

There is a sticky in the General Dog Forum that lists breeds that are either banned or restricted in various places. It's pretty scary the number of breeds that are 'considered aggressive'. It is illegal in our state to make a law against a breed of dog, but I think the most common are pitbulls, rotties, dobermans and shepherds. Mind you, I'm replying to the "considered" aggressive part, not dogs that I think are actually aggressive. I know huskys appear on that list of restricted breeds in some areas.

Your best bet is going to be to talk to/meet with your potential landlords in person, so they can meet your dog and learn that he's not a stereotypical aggressive dog. If it's an apartment complex, you'll be out of luck if the dog breed is on a list, as those tend to be non-negotiable.

Some have a list against dogs over a certain weight instead of breed too. It depends on your landlord. Insurance companies in some areas won't insure people who have dogs of certain breeds, but only in this areas (I have no idea why they are so inconsistent) so that could be an issue if your landlord has their property insured through them.

Something you can do which might help convince a landlord your large dog is well behaved and hopefully not destructive is to go get the Canine Good Citizen certification. Most Petsmarts offer the test, and it costs about $10 to take. It's an AKC title, but any dog can earn it. It's pretty easy if your dog has basic obedience.

Breed generalizations are never a good idea. Individual dogs in any breed can be aggressive.

A correct Rottweiler is not an aggressive dog. Rottweilers can be territorial, but should be friendly and sociable with friendly people when the owner is present.

You may have some trouble. Every apartment I looked at in the North Carolina banned Husky's. Other common breeds were Pits, Rotts, Dobies, Chows, Dals, Malamutes, Wolf Hybrids.
And yes, my brokerage firm actually had the audacity to refer to those breed as "agressive" on the list. When I called to ask about pet policies, I was told my cat was fine, but "agressive' dogs were not allowed. Then she had to look up to the list to figure out what that actually meant.

Huskies are banned from this complex too. Not for being 'aggressive' actually, but for being destructive. It'd be best to talk to the individual landlord.

I suspect that it depends on who you talk to. Any dog in any breed can be aggressive, given the right circumstances.

My advise would be to ask for a meeting with the landlord or apartment mgr, so that they can meet your dog in person. That way they can determine whether they want to rent to YOU with YOUR dog instead of bucketing your dog in the typical sterotypes perpetuated by the media and public fears.

Anything with teeth, lack of socialization/training...and/or in the wrong place at the wrong time is a possibility.

I don't think s/he is asking for personal views rather than landlord views.
