Many beezer people have a few other Podenco breeds as well and thats not counting ALL of the hunt packs.

Speaking of, Amber he could very well come from a hunt breeder and not a conformation/coursing breeder they tend too run many Podenco breeds/mixes together. But given how he looks I really dont see why you would have an issues getting him PAL'ed.

    Ibizan

As an owner and breeder of one of the rare breeds you are considering and someone who has written a comparison of the Ibizan and Podengo please let me comment.

1st there are appox 130 registered podengos of the medium or Big size in the US and I can tell you where they all are. I am the only breeder of Smooth Grande and I really know where they all are and can guarantee you that they were NOT breed to an Ibizan. RE: Azawak, not even a chance - they are even more rare and their body time includes a more significan roach in topline but more importanly their height vs length - is significantly different - they are much taller than long.

Lurchers are sighthounds bred to sporting dogs - this photo shows too many Ibizan characteristics and no sporting dog characteristics.

Soughi - think of more of a greyhound look - this dog also does not have that.

I agree with the others that it is likely an Ibizan with a wrongly colored nose. In any breed - if there was a fault - that doesn't make it a different breed. I believe that getting a pals number as an Ibizan would be appropriate.

Historically the primitive dogs around the Mediteranian region have many common traits so likely just the expression of history than a mix of a different breed.

To learn more about the Podengo I invited you to look at our website: www.podengo-mediogrande.com

I will post a copy of an article that I wrote comparing the 2 with pictures for you to download later today.

NOT Podengo - not at all

There are not many of the big size in the US and only 1 male in a hunt pack of medio and pequeno. Last time I heard he was 12 and that was 2 years ago - unlikly he is still alive. People who hunt with Podengos DO NOT BREED IN BIGGER SIGHT HOUNDS rather prefer the smaller size given the small spaces they hunt in. I am in contact with most of the hunt pack owners in the US and none of them 'go big' - they don't import big from Portugal because it's too expensive. More common mixes have included basenji and beagle.

Exactly - this is why I have a hard time believing that someone got ahold of a Podengo to breed to an Ibizan... even by accident.

Alrighty... crossing my fingers I get a response.

I just sent an email to the people I got him from asking them if they are still in contact at all with Joey's former owners since the boyfriend had mentioned them being friends with the people that owned Joey initially. Maybe they can help me backtrack to find out where he came from exactly and at the very least maybe the initial owner will have some puppy pics of Joey they don't mind passing along my way.

I'll be in Grovetown (Augusta) GA area more than likely around Thanksgiving. We're trying to go out there to see my family and get the rest of our stuff out of our storage unit. We will have Joey with us when we go too.

I did some Googling, because once you said "importing from Portugal" I knew I had the name wrong... I apparently mixed up the names PodenCo and PodenGo. Go figure lol

Podenco is just another name for Ibizan hound though, isn't it? Podenco Ibicenco. There's also the the Podenco Canario and Podenco Andaluz but I don't think those are common in the US at all either.

You can find 6-week-old Ibizan pups for sale on puppyfind.com right now. Yes, the breed seems to be very tightly controlled for the most part, but BYBs are out there.

I'm sure it is. However, I checked puppyfind a few days ago and there were a few more beezers listed on there as well.

To be fair, just advertising litters for sale does not make someone a "BYB". I searched google for Ibizan Hounds for sale and did find classfieds but most are show/coursing breeders.

    I did find Ibizan/Saluki crosses: http://www.pupcity.com/puppies-for-sale/dog/pqwotciryzqwbvgs/

Someone mentioned earlier there was a...not so great breeder in FL but Joey was too young to be one of her's. That could be but he could be a couple generations removed from her dogs, if they were placed indiscriminately. There was a huge rescue in the 90s of Belgians from a breeder who sort of went off the deep end. Abandoned a lot of dogs, sent others to local pounds, etc. I met someone who told me that got a Belgian from a pound as a young puppy and the pound had a sister of his as well. The dog was too young to be from the breeder but the pound he was at was in her same general area. My guess was someone had gotten a couple dogs from her and thought they'd make money breeding a rare breed...but then couldn't find a market for them. he still looked very much like her dogs though and was likely just one generation removed from her dogs (which were quality dogs). A few generations of pet breeding can really affect "breed type" though.
