I feed Visa a raw prey-model diet. When she goes on sleepovers she gets Nature's Variety Raw Instincts (hard to do raw at other people's houses lol). :)

I've had her on several other diets since getting her last year. When I first got her I put her on Innova EVO. She didn't like it, and it made her ITCH ITCH ITCH like crazy. She's never itched so much in her life! Then she started losing weight like crazy, so I switched her to Kirkland Premium Puppy Food. She gained weight and stopped itching, but she didn't like the food and was reluctant to eat it. So I switched her on to Timberwolf Organics Wild & Natural line. Not only did she not like it, but it gave her bloody diahrrea. She lost her weight again. I put her on California Natural Lamb puppy food, and she began to gain weight again, and she actually liked the food. I was happy for her to finally be on a food she loved, but she started itching like crazy again. So I switched her to California Natural Chicken Puppy Food, and she loved that too, but still itched. So I went to Natural Balance Duck & Potato Formula, and she ate it alright, but still itched. I was getting fed up with it all. I had wanted to have her on RAW since the day I got her, but didn't have a freezer. I switched her to Nature's Variety Raw Instincts. The itching stopped, and she ate her food. Shortly after, I switched her to RAW even though I didn't have a freezer, and she began to look healthier. Then I got a freezer and became even more devoted to her raw diet. No itching, she ate it very enthusiastically, her coat became shinier, her dandruff started to dissipate, her behaviour improved, she developed more energy, she was less high-strung, her teeth improved, etc. It just changed her, and she's been so much better ever since. I can't wait until she's pregnant, because I want to feed her a diet that I know is making her puppies as healthy as possible, even though they hadn't come into the world yet.

What do you feed your dog? What have your experiences with other foods been?

That's weird....my puppy has done very well on the Timberwolf Wild and Natural and hasn't had any problems, and when he was on EVO, he actually gained weight (he did well on that too, he just wasn't thrilled about the taste).

OK, that's it. Tomorrow morning, instead of cornflakes, I'm gnawing on a raw chicken leg with my coffee.....:p

I started Quigley on Nutro Natural Choice puppy food when I first got him, but switched to better quality kibble as soon as I was able to locate it. For a while I rotated between California Natural Chicken, Innova (regular adult), Canidae and the old Wellness Lamb formula. He did pretty well on all of them, except for the Wellness, which wreaked havoc on his teeth and it took a lot of work to get them clean again.

As I became more and more involved in my research, I got pretty tired of all the crap in regards to commercial food and started feeding a home prepared diet. First I started out with home cooked but soon transitioned over to mostly raw with some cooked items and I also still feed any healthy table scraps that are suitable for the dog.

Even though I feed a diet that is fairly close to natural, I do analyze nutrient levels and adjust as per NRC recommendations. I didn't use to do that but eventually analyzed some of my old recipes and found that they often tended to be lacking in B complex vitamins and some minerals and were too high in others. With a little extra planning that problem is solved though. :)
