I don't like it cause it's wrong... he's met all my cousins (different ages), about 6 of my friends at different times, a bunch of my dad friends at different times, a couple repair men, and more spread through his young puppy hood.
And I just said, he goes to the park, goes to petsmart, I don't even know where you got the idea that he hasn't been socialized.
He doesn't like his leash because he stays right by my side so I didn't think it was needed. The only time I could use it is when we went to go somewhere, which was hard for me to get around cause my dad works like all the time...

It's alright. But, either way, he prefers being home... he likes to go on rides for a little while and go to the park... when we do go to the park, he doesn't like it much... he explores for a little bit and then just doesn't feel like doing anything else, so we take him home.
Well, we did go to the park with a leash.. that still didn't change his behavior on walks..
What's wrong if Rocky's home a lot? He's socialized when a bunch of people come over, am I right?

don't know how a thread on wearing out a puppy got to be a debate on leashes, but anyway back to the topic..do you know anyone else that has a dog about your dog's age close by? Victor also meets up with Shaffer early in the morning for about a 2 or 3 hour romp..that and his walks..and bubbles..and the weekend trip to the off leash dog park is what it takes to wear my pup out. You might try posting a sign somewhere asking if anyone has a puppy your dog can play with..and a yard, or check with pet smart.

My dogs don't go out in public regularly, like to the pet store or the vet's. They are taken for daily walks, and see other people, but they don't go everywhere with us - that'd be hard. I don't think Fran means you should take Rocky with you everywhere, that'd probably be really hard.
To get Rocky comfortable with his leash, simply take the leash and a few yummy treats (meaty ones seem to work best), and clip the leash to his collar. One the leash is attached, give him lots of praise and stuff his mouth with treats
. Just let him drag the leash around with him for a little while. Do this for a few days until he is used to having the leash attached and walking around with it on. Make sure that every time you put it on you give praise and treats, and throughout the time that he has it on, he gets treats every now and then. After a few days of this, pick up the leash, and with treats in hand, start walking slowly around the yard. If he doesn't want to walk, take a treat and set it on the ground, encouraging him to come get the treat (and the only way to do that is to walk).

I love those pictures of the bubbles and the pvc rope toy! What terrific ideas! Those dogs are having a blast and getting some energy out! Fantastic!
I go on hikes with my dogs, but I live in an area of wilderness and there's lots of places to go, plus I can drive, so I can go to different trails. But, you can still run around your yard and try getting him interested in a game. Maybe you can modify the fetch game so that he'll stay interested better....hmmmm....let's see, what about running away with the ball and acting like a fool? LOL. Make him think you're having so much fun and he's missing out if he doesn't run after you. How about riding your bike around the yard and tie something to the back that entices him....like a racoon tail? LOL. (I saw that on Where the Red Fern Grows when the boy was teaching his coonhounds to follow a scent)
If you search high and low for a motivator to make your dog more "into" going on a leash, he should come around. Just make it fun, get treats, add a throw of a ball to assoicate good times with being on the leash. Try walking a short distance, part way around your block and make a game out of it. Try not to get discouraged. He'll grow up and get use to stuff. I've said this before, but I'll say it again. I had a horse trainer help me with a semi wild Arabian mare. She thought she was being murdered every time you did anything with her. This trainer said, "whatever she doesn't like, do it more." And by golly, she was right. (just don't frighten the animal, but practice things more that he doesn't particularily go for.)
About socializing...I had Lyric as well as my GSDs (in the past) out every single day, meeting someone new, seeing new enviornments, all kinds of objects, different ground surfaces, noisy traffic. With Lyric, I had to drive an hour to go to a decent sized city to expose him to all kinds of things. I wanted lots of people to pat him. I drove to the city about 3 or 4 times a week and the rest of the time, just around here, down to the little corner store or to the cafe to visit. He saw lots of dogs and went to puppy obedience and puppy agility after that. He was very socialized to dogs and is now dog aggressive. So, some dogs will not like other dogs. That's just the way they are sometimes, socialized or not. BUT, with people and unfamiliar things in the enviornment, I am of the opinion that saturation of socializing is vital, not that you overwhelm or frighten the dog in any way, but a steady diet of getting out and about and meeting lots of strangers in a variety of situations and enviornments, as well as at home is extremely important, especially with a protective type dog like a Doberman or a GSD...or many others.

i made up all kinds of silly games when i was about your age with my dog charlie..one was to put a super ball under some cups mix them up and see which one..then we would hide the super ball in the room somewhere..(first he had to sit and stay around the corner) and have him find it..he really learned to use his nose early that way. Jumping thru the hula hoop was bronki's favorite..and easy enuff to teach and cheappppp to! i think you can get a hula hoop for under five dollars..just start with it on the ground and hold the treat on the other side and gradually lift it up. Do make sure you do it on a soft surface and not concrete so you spare their joints. Bronki in the end could jump thru if i held the hoop level with my shoulder which was pretty impressive for a big heavy dog (he weighed 80 lbs)..

Thankyou! Yeah my GSD's 5years old. That picture I took with my webcam, so it's pretty bad! I have some beautiful polaroids with him but no scanner. He doesn't quite look like in the picture anymore. He's been living with my brother and the last time I visited he looked pretty huge, could be because I'm used to seeing my little puppy. He looked like he gained a LOT of weight. Seems that my brother doesn't play with him much, and I just despise that. I just want to take him back home with me. But he's still my little baby!

To drain my doggy's energy we play in the hose now that it's warm out, we play hide and seek in the house, which is a fantastic game to play, esp. for sit/stay commands, and plus it's so fun seeing the look on their face when they find you!! Also, for special times at night when my dogs have so much energy they are driving me nuts, we go out in the backyard and play with the laser pointer, I got it at the dollar store and they go nuts every time they hear the little jingle, they know it's time to chase each other and have a grand old time. We also play tug games and hide the toy. It's fun creating new games!
