Where is Canidae 20 dollars for 20lbs? I've never found Canidae for anything less than $29
The 40lb bag of canidae is $34 here.

Either way... Nutro is the same price (maybe more expensive), but you have to feed 1/3 more or so... So your nutro bag doesn't last as long, for a lesser quality food.

In the end, Canidae is cheaper. Innova is a tad more expensive, but still cheaper than nutro in the end.

I just found a local place that sells Innova and after all the rave reviews on this forum decided to switch. I just got a 20 or 22lb bag for $22.

I do not feed Nutro. I feed Flint River Ranch. Canidae was my first choice but didn't fit within my budget. Flint River Ranch fit in my budget, was still better quality than I was feeding before, and they ship really fast. Within two days I have my order. (3 depending on what day I put in the order.)

I feed my 2 Boxers Innova adult(green bag) & MY APBT Innova EVO.

Innova EVO here is 44.99 in the 28.6lb bag- EVO lasts me 3 1/2 months
Innova Adult here is 41.99 for the 33LB bag- Adult lasts me with 2 big dogs 2 months. is that worth it to you? I believe so:D

Back when i was feeding pedigree I was buying 1 50lb bag a week and spending way more money on crap food than I should have been.

Pedigree has BHA and BHT which has been known to cause cancer.

I feed Hannah Innova Evo large bite (no difference from regular but I think she takes the larger pieces better) mixed with Innova Evo canned. I have fed her Nutro (YUCKY she got really sick the whole two bags she had of that) and then Eagle Pack holistic chicken meal formula which she loved, then switched her to Canidae which she really liked too, then we switched her to Evo and that is by far (well I think it is) the one that she loves the most especially the canned formula I think she preferred over the other canned varieties that she got. I've never seen her food bowl get clean so fast now that she's on Evo!

Science Diet:

Lamb Meal, Brewers Rice, Rice Flour, Ground Whole Grain Wheat, Ground Whole Grain Sorghum, Corn Gluten Meal, Cracked Pearled Barley, Animal Fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols and citric acid), Dried Beet Pulp, Soybean Oil, Chicken Liver Flavor, Flaxseed, Potassium Chloride, Iodized Salt, vitamins (L-Ascorbyl-2-Polyphosphate (source of vitamin C), Vitamin E Supplement, Niacin, Thiamine Mononitrate, Vitamin A Supplement, Calcium Pantothenate, Biotin, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Riboflavin, Folic Acid, Vitamin D3 Supplement), Choline Chloride, Vitamin E Supplement, Taurine, minerals (Ferrous Sulfate, Zinc Oxide, Copper Sulfate, Manganous Oxide, Calcium Iodate, Sodium Selenite), preserved with Mixed Tocopherols and Citric Acid, Beta-Carotene, Rosemary Extract.

Food Fragments: Lower cost by-products of another food manufacturing process. Examples include wheat bran and brewer's rice (a waste product of the alcohol industry).

Corn: Corn products are difficult for dogs to digest.

Rice Flour: All of the naturally occurring vitamins have been leeched out by the processing.

Animal Fat: Animal fat is a "generic" fat source that is most often made up of rendered animal fat, restaurant grease, or other oils too rancid or deemed inedible for humans. Look for a named fat source, such as poultry or chicken fat, that is naturally preserved.

Salt: While salt is a necessary mineral, it is also generally present in sufficient quantities in the ingredients pet foods include. Just like for humans, too much sodium intake is unhealthy for animals. In poor quality foods it is often used in large amounts to add flavor and make the food more interesting.

Canidae:

Chicken Meal, Turkey Meal, Brown Rice, White Rice, Lamb Meal, Chicken Fat (preserved with Mixed Tocopherols), Herring Meal, Flax Seed, Sun Cured Alfalfa Meal, Sunflower Oil, Chicken, Lecithin, Monocalcium Phosphate, Potassium Chloride, Choline Chloride, Linoleic Acid, Rosemary Extract, Sage Extract, Dried Enterococcus Faecium, Dried Lactobacillus Acidophilus Fermentation Product, Dried Aspergillus Oryzae Fermentation Extract, Dried Bacillus Subtilis Fermentation Extract, Inulin (from Chicory root), Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Fermentation Solubles, Yucca Schidigera Extract, Mixed Tocopherols (source of Vitamin E), Zinc Amino Acid Chelate, Manganese Amino Acid Chelate, Iron Amino Acid Chelate, Copper Amino Acid Chelate, Cobalt Amino Acid Chelate, Vitamin A Supplement, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Ascorbic Acid (source of Vitamin C), Niacin, Thiamine Mononitrate (Vitamin B1), Riboflavin (source of B2), Beta Carotene, Calcium Pantothenate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (Vitamin B6), Calcium Iodate, Folic Acid, D-Biotin, Sodium Selenite, Papaya, Vitamin B12 Supplement.

Pet Food Direct prices:

20lb bag of Science Diet: $23

20lb bag of Canidae: $21

You all have to remember that not all of the good brands you have are available everywhere and not everyone can afford to have dog food shipped to them. Where we live there isn't such a thing as "good" dog food. You either get store brand stuff, Ol Roy, Purina brand, *possibly Eukanuba or Pedigree*, or Beneful (same ingredients as Purina). There was only one brand, and I can't think of the name now, that had Lamb listed within the first three ingredients. My dogs have never had lamb, it would do no good to switch if they turn out to be allergic to it because they've never had it before. Until this forum I'd never heard of (and still haven't seen) Canidae and the Innova brands. It's just not around here. Alot of people are doing the best they can for their dogs depending on where they live or a (possible) limited budget. I think (and will probably get bashed for it) that as long as a pup/dog gets all their shots/rabies/dewormed and goes in if there are any medical problems, have nice coats, clean skin, no fleas/ticks, healthy weight, healthy stools, eat/drink regularly and are loved and cared for then the owner is doing pretty darn good if the only problem is "not so good/bad" dog food brands.

With a bit of research it is often possible to find better quality foods than the well known mainstream stuff. It doesn't have to be Innova or Eagle or Solid Gold etc., there are many products that are still decent but don't fall into the category of garbage like Kibbles and Bits, Beneful and Science Diet.

Feed and farm supply stores also often carry pet food, and sometimes you can even buy from a distributor directly if they don't have a retailer where you are. There are also online stores that offer free shipping for pet food purchases within certain states.

I don't have the intention of bashing you, LabBreeder, so please don't take this the wrong way - but nutrition is the very foundation of health and many of the common problems people think are normal in dogs can be eliminated by feeding good quality food that isn't full of poor quality ingredients like meat from 4D animals, food industry byproducts, rendered restaurant grease and so on.

It's mostly a question of whether people bother educating themselves about the differences in quality and whether they are willing to make an effort finding better quality products that work out for their specific situation.

I started feeding Exclusive and for many reasons I am making the switch to Purina ONE Puppy Lamb and Rice. First its ridiculously expensive at the store I have to buy it from, and two I am in the process of getting a car and mom doesnt like to drive so far to get a bag of food.

ONE is a pretty decent food, and I think the #1 grocery brand. It actually has meat (lamb #1 ingredient) yogurt and oatmeal, but like every grocery store food, corn gluten and brewers rice.

But for someone who is on a limited budget, I say choose ONE over any other grocery store food!

There is a store 80 miles from you that sells Innova. Have you called and asked them if they will ship to you, or for their price? I know 80 miles is a far distance to drive, so I'm just encouraging you to call and ask about shipping.

Pet Food Direct prices:

Purina ONE Puppy Lamb and Rice: 20lb bag -- $24.29

Canidae: 20lb bag -- $20.99

If you have a feed store that sells Exclusive, they most likely sell Canidae. Canidae is going to be cheaper than Exclusive, and you may also end up feeding less--resulting in even more savings.

With our "family", the price of dog food is not an issue. If it's what's best for the dog so be it. Less of something for us. We fully understand the committments of having dogs. (Not saying that any of you don't)

BUT as Mordy said, once your educated about these foods you should make the switch. From all the compared prices Herschel has posted, the better foods are CHEAPER.

Now no one can say whether it will make a life changing difference in your dog but it MAY. And what kind of dog lover takes the risk?

I fed all of those sh!tty foods. Yes I did. But once I knew better, they were switched right away. ANd I felt horrible for not knowing any better, and not doing any research like I should have. It's very easy with all of the fancy packaging and the dozen commercials to be led to believe it's a good food.

But anyone that frequents this forum should know that Purina, Iams, Eukanuba etc, are NOT good foods, and in the states at least, better, higher quality foods can be purchased for less!

As Hershcel said, on a higher quality food you'll feed less as well.
