Blackmouth cur:
1. "A blackmouth what? What's that?"
2. Very hard to find a breeder
3. Only recognized by the UKC, so not always considered a "real breed".

Catahoula leopard dog:
1. Chaos demons
2. Chaos demons
3. Did I mention they're chaos demons?

I wish my breed wasn't as popular as it is, popularity has never done a breed much good. Cavaleirs weren't accepted into the AKC untill 1995 and are already 27th in the breed rankings for dogs registered with the AKC.

The one thing that does turn people off from the Cavalier is the massive amount of devastaing genetic problems that they are prone to. Unfortunately there aren't many people out there who realise how bad it really is. I've met quite a few Cavalier owners who didn't even realise there are any problems in the breed.

Toller:

- Tons of energy
- Odd quirks that a lot of people find difficult to live with
- Extremely drivey and playful

Atleast, that's what I think turns people away from the breed anyway. There isn't anything I don't really like about them, and I've never asked anyone what would turn them away from the breed, so it was a little difficult for me to answer. I hope they never, ever become popular though.

Mountain Cur

1) "Curs are just mutts" i.e. nobody knows about them to look, at least here in the north.

Well, actually, that's the only one I can think of based on Meg:D . I could give her away 10x a day because she is so sweet and easy. Based on what I know of the breed, though,

2) A lovely mix of a terrier's tenacity and drive, with a hound's ability to shut off every incoming signal other than that coming through the nose.

3) Like most hunting dogs, a high exercise requirement. Actually, that is Meg too, but she's great off-leash and plays fetch (i.e. not #2), so it's easy for me to deal with.

Saint Bernard

To put it bluntly:

1) They snore
2) They're huge
3) they drool.

I've owned 6 saint bernards in my lifetime, and only one of them didn't snore, but it only lived to be 6. (saint bernards have a life span of 8-10 years)

Mixed breed... Well, where do I begin?

I could probably list more reasons why I love them to be honest, and I'd go as far as to say, they are the probably the most popular breed of dog in terms of ACTUAL numbers :D

Here anyway - you see far more mixes than you do pedigrees.

My breed, duh, Great Danes:

#1 reason someone would not own a dane:

SIZE (ironically, this is the same reason many DO own a dane)

#2 -

Lifespan - heartbreakingly short

#3 -

Could be a couple different reasons depending on the person...possibilities are:

Drooling

Possibility of dog aggression and/or human aggression (Sadly they are in the top 8 on the Serious Dog Bites/Fatalities list)

Financial reasons (it's expensive to properly own a dane)

Border Collies -

Activity level

Intensity (or enthusiasm, or drive, or whatever you want to call it)

Size (some people want either a super small dog or a super big dog, so they don't like the border collie's size)

Chihuahua

1. Reputation to be "yappy" little dogs

2. Size- they are very small... 2-6lbs in the breed standard.

3. Hyper

Boxers

- after living with one amazing female Boxer named Diamond for 7 years ( she was already 6 when we moved in with her owner) It's hard to say anything to negative about them but If I had to pick out a few things I'd say

-High energy levels combined with extremely independent nature makes training a very tedious thing which needs to be religiously followed and worked on

- Very ramboncous and when not provided with the proper outlets will destroy everything

-They do tend to snore and drool a bit

Rottweiler/German Shepherd/Collie Cross

-Very high drive, constantly needs jobs to be given, out back he is the official basket ball herder.

-Very dominant personality which requires extra attention to positive trainig

-Very protective so needs constant socilization to ensure natural gaurding tendancies do not transilate into aggression towards all things besides his immediate family.

Beagles
1) They will not stay in the yard. Ever. My 11 year old will take off given the chance
2) They bark. Lilly doesn't bay, but most do
3) Lots of energy. Just because they are small, does not mean they want to lay on the couch. It's just this year that Lilly has started to slow down.

What Noludoru said.

Chihuahuas: Not the most popular, but unfortunately, quite popular.

Will get stepped on. (they could, but they are amazing how they learn to watch out for big feet)

Yap too much (they certainly have good lung volume and are superb watch dogs. But a lot of that can be tempered by training)

Nasty, ill tempered little ankle biters. (that's just B.S. Any dog can be that way when mishandled. They actually can have lovely little temperaments)

Not real dogs. (heh, heh) (translation: small)

ALL OF THE ABOVE PLUS THEY ARE 60-80 POUND LAP DOGS!!! lol

I MENT TO QUOTE....

Doberman Pinscher:
1. Bad reputation.. darn those evil dobies!

2. Exercise requirements... most of the rescues I've talked to agree that the majority of their dogs are turned in due to "WHOAH! That dog has way too much energy, let's get another puppy instead.."

3. Most people are unable to handle a dog that would probably die to protect you, a dog that thinks for itself...

AND ADD THAT THEY THINK THEY ARE LAP DOGS WHICH IS GREAT FOR ME!!!

-Lots of people think of them as only froo froo dogs due to their show cut.

-The smaller counterparts are said to be yappy.

-Because of off the irresponsible doodle breeders using them in their mix of whatevers makes a lot of people think they aren't good enough as a breed of it's own.

-Coat maintenance

-Men and some womean think it takes away from their machoness. lol I think it takes a very strong self assured man to admit they like the breed. Which I find hot, hehe, that's one of the reasons I married my sweetie.

American Pit bull terriers

-bad reputation
-a history of them being used for dog fighting
-serious dog aggression
-their dependency on people makes them destructive when left alone
-hyper depending on the dog
-stubborn depending on the dog

most things negative differs from dog to dog but the main reason is deffinatly their reputation

I actually read some about pit bulls from the first page, i agree about the toy thing! man these guys have strong teeth. I love kongs... Thank you kong! :p

But I wanted to add that they also have a reputation of being "tough" and the "gangster" type guys like to use them as guard dogs. So once these people find out that pits are NOT guard dogs...they tend to end up in bad situations.

Cockers:
(in no particular order)
1. there (former) popularity and current reputation
Popularity brings BYBs, Mills, genetic / health, and temperment/behavior problems.
Somehow they've gained a reputation for being yappy, snappy, bad with kids, etc
Quite frankly, the Cocker Spaniel is not for everyone. From 1936 through 1952, and again from 1983 through 1990, it was the #1 breed in the USA according to AKC registration statistics. But a lot of people had bad experiences with Cockers, and it's no longer even close to being in the top 10 anymore. (which is fine with me!)
2. Eyes, Ears, and Allergies
Cherry eyes, Glaucoma, cataracts, Ear infections, Seborrheic dermatitis and about a million other possible skin problems...
3. Excited urination or submissive urination
Compared to other breeds, Cockers are more likely to lose bladder control when happy or frightened. Of course, most Cockers do not do this, but some do... and it can be a VERY frustrating problem to live with. Or so I hear :p
4. Coat and Grooming
5. Many Cockers don't handle being alone very well
because they are so people-oriented
They may bark, chew everything in sight, dig in your garden, or pee & poop destructively. When you finally get home, a crazed monster is waiting for you. If you've heard that Cockers have a reputation for being hyper or a little crazy, it's because of all the people that have thought they could just leave a Cocker alone until they got home.
IMO

GSDs
1. Shedding
2. Reputation
3. Shedding
4. Exercise
5. Training
6. Shedding
7. Some have high Drive, or dominence, whatever you may call it.

did I mention shedding? According to my local GSD rescue, a lot of people get rid of their GSDs because they get sick of the hair, or they can't handle the distructivness...

Least she's older and it's less common, but sadly it still happens and not everyone takes it well..

Borzoi

1. Difficult to train/perceived as stupid.
Actually, they're very smart and perceptive, but they won't trade you 85 sits for cookies. They will, however, figure out how to break into the cabinet and get their own darn cookies.

2. Money/difficult to obtain
You can't find a cheapo $200 borzoi in the paper. If you want a borzoi, you're going to have to find and go to a real breeder. People who are used to going to responsible breeders for other breeds won't have problems with the prices, but people who are used to buying cheap dogs from the paper are in for some sticker shock.

3. What's a borzoi?
Most people don't even know what they are. When walking Venus, I have been asked, "Is that a dog?"
