How old was your dog when you took it out for it's 1st walk???
and at what age did it have it's injections???

Here in england they have thier 1st injection at 9 weeks old and then the 2nd injection at 12 weeks old, then you have to wait until they are 13 weeks old before they can go out for any kind of walks.

I just wondered because I've read on a few topics/posts that some people have taken thier dogs out at 8 weeks old.....
cheers
saz :)

My dogs both got their first injection before I got them. I got them both at abot 10 weeks. They got their first walk the day after I got them home. The walks were real short but I started training them almost right away. You just have to be real easy on them and make it fun.

The reason the vets tell you to wait to take them out is so they have time to build up immunity to their injections before they are "potentially" exposed to different diseases. You don't really have to wait...but you DO need to pay attention to what types of places you take them. It is actually better for the pup to adjust and become social if you start SOONER than later. I would say defiantly avoid parks and any places that a lot of dogs frequent. I don't take my puppies on grass (with the exception of my own yard) until they have had all their vaccinations because Parvo can live in the soil of grass for up to 1 year after an exposed dog has been there. I take my pups out on the pavement though and if they are small enough I will carry them in pet supply stores but not put them on the ground until their vaccine series is done. I also take them to all my family member's homes to meet them and to meet their dogs that I know are healthy and vaccinated...frequent car rides too! My pup is 11 weeks old and has had 2 vaccinations. He started puppy pre-school last night and although he is not fully vaccinated yet I think the benefits way outweigh the risks for getting him socialized with as many people and different dogs as possible :) The key is paying close attention to where your pup is allowed to go while out with you...if you feel like strange dogs have been in that area then I would steer clear or not put the pup down until his injections are done. I also don't let my pups chew on strange things while out with me...they can pick up parvo if they chew on something from a parvo infected area. Just use your better judgement and you will be fine...now get out their and let your pup meet the world ;) ;) :)

I waited a while to take them due to the large number of lab/golden sized dogs around here and I didn't want one of them getting hurt if one of them got too rough. I got them at 10 weeks and I think they were nearly 4 months before I took them out around the neighborhood. King instantly started playing too rough for almost every dog we met, regardless of size. Molly hated every minute of the walks, there was too much "stuff" going on, and so I stopped taking her. The thing that really made me quit was having three fingers dislocated due to her lunging at stuff, like a leaf or paper bag blowing.

Ive got 2 great danes and its suggested that you dont take them on walks till they are 12mths of age, as thats when the bones and growth plates are stronger.
Danes should only do the excersice that they please, ie playing in the backyard.
