I think pekes are actually pretty cute when they are clipped, but I don't like them in all that coat. Does the breed have lots of health issues or something?
Well there is the severe breathing issue that comes with having a face you could rest a level on, there is the walking balance issue, there is the eye issues, there is an overheating issue, there is the reproduction issues, and there are a few immune disorders that they're prone to.

Broken in design is what I'd call them.

I get that people love their dogs and the more odd they look the more people seem to love them, but join reality for a minute please. If you're breeding dogs that couldn't last a week on their own, maybe you should rethink your breeding practices. The problems we breed dogs with is astounding. Is it so humans can feel more human and caring, like they caring for a helpless creature?

I don't understand showing in it's present form. I know lots of people have fun and work at it very hard. A good number of those people that do it on a less grand scale have good dogs and are genuinely good people, but I gotta wonder just how good of an endeavor is it, when the the "destination" or goal is something like what is represented at these big time shows? It doesn't seem feasible, ethical, or practical.

Maybe it's different for show pekes, but the one I've spent the most time with (someone else's dog) is 17 now, and still active. She had an oops puppy at 12 with a larger dog, gave birth naturally because no one knew she was pregnant, does fine in SoCal summers, and has always been very athletic. Going by her, I'd think they were fun, spunky little dogs with the constitution of a moose.

I'm sad to hear that's not the case.

IME show and pet bred pekes are very different.

This. Most pet pekes I've come across actually have legs and a bit of a face, so they're able to be dogs a bit more easily than the waddling carpet slug that is the show version. One of my favorite dogs at my old boarding resort was a Peke named Kingsley. Just an absolute love and was obviously a BYB dog, but in this case, that was actually a good thing.

Most of the Pekes I meet look like this:

and are active fun healthy little dogs for the most part!

Maybe it's the show coat itself, or maybe perhaps the breeding..
but regardless,I wasn't impressed with the dog that won.

Tragically, its been my experience from meeting pekes that the BYB "pet-bred" ones are healthier, happier dogs than the ones from "responsible" show breeders. I actually LIKE "pet" pekes . . . they're hilarious little dogs. The show ones make me gag.

When you have managed to so over breed a breed that the best bet of getting a healthy one is the lady down the street who has been breeding her pet pekes together because "they're great little dogs and just so cute" . . . the breed is SCREWED UP.

Virtually all of them are from one of two breeders...kinda weird. But yeah the show Mals already look rather distinctly different than the sport/working Mals.

It really depends on the lines and the breeder. Some of them are getting more extreme heads on them. Some lack angulation and have really stiff gaits. Some breeders go for moderation and have more versatile dogs. Some are mixing show/working lines. Some dogs being shown are strictly from show lines. Harry's mom is major pointed and she was nothing but working bred. I even showed Harry a few times. Didn't win anything, but I did enter.

I guess they are like any breed when I think about it :p

Okay I think my explanation was more convoluted than the way BorderWars wrote it originally so let me try to explain again.

The whole sable thing is a CCA issue. They are debating splitting the colors. Chris is not weighing in on that discussion in this piece. Going to requote from his page since it's way up in the thread now.

So what he's saying is that the CCA is all tied up in knots over the sable issue even though there IS no sable issue because the only known color health issue is the whole merle thing...which is the same (as you said) regardless of base coat color. "Yet" while the CCA is all up in arms over the sable issue, there are breeder creating double merles (the dead, infertility, blind, deaf Collies) simply so they can use them to create all merle litters.

Further that other clubs around the world have recognized that merle X merle is the key issue here and have banned it, while CCA allows itself to be distracted with health-irrelevant color issues and Westminster rewards the people doing/supporting the breeding of double merles with a BOB.
Okay, thanks for clearing that up for me. :) I need to get more sleep before posting to avoid these forumderps.

Sounds about right :)

And if Harry's mom is major point, I have no doubt she'd be able to finish if someone wanted to pursue it with her. I've met quite a few working line Mals who I thought could finish in AKC without much trouble.

I think you could show Sloan and do fine. Especially if you start when you move to OR. The AKC shows here are fairly large and decent but Mals are always under represented!

Mals are underrepresented all around it seems. No reason not to give it a go with Sloan, the hardest part will be finding competition!
