My best friend's dog Max went to the bridge today. He was only one.

Max showed up at her house this spring hanging around her barn looking for food and company. He had been abandoned a while before by her neighbor, who had decided to get a cat instead, and just put him out to fend for himself.
He was a BC mix, and one of the brightest, sharpest little dogs I ever met- full of life and energy, all he wanted was a home. He was learning all his lessons and becoming a super member of the family, my friend was getting really bonded to him. He had super potential to be a phenomanal obedience or agility dog
About 2 weeks ago he was struck by a very rare infection. He was treated aggresively for pneumonia, (antibiotics)- but it didnt seem to be helping- he could hardly breathe- a second vet came back to the clinic this week- one who has seen this before and recognised it - turned out to be a rare (evil) fungal infection called Blastomycosis (found in the soil- exposure perhaps by digging??)- it is very aggresive, and pretty much only seen in the Midwest. It infected his lungs and lymph nodes. Earlier this week It also caused him to go blind.
My friend said even though he could hardly walk or breath, he always wagged his tail for her, right till the end. She released him mercifully to the Bridge today

RIP little Max

How very sad. I'm so terribly sorry for your friend. She can reflect though, on what a loving, wonderful life she gave him even though it was short. Thank goodness for people like her who pick up after other heartless people who abandon their dogs. My heart goes out to her at this time and I hope she finds peace. So very hard.

Thanks everyone
yes- my friend has taken in quite a few, there are a lot of strays where she lives. Some she housebreaks, has them neutered, and has found homes for, with various friends, but kept only two really special ones- Max, and a little spaniel mix .
She is looking at some BC rescue dogs now, as loss of Max has left a big hole

Oh, that would be so good for her to save another dog and give him/her a happy life with lots of love returned. I wish her the best.

... and he got one ... an extremely loving home with your friend. :)

That's all any dog really wants, so glad to hear Max knew the love he so very much deserved ... and knew it for the rest of his life right to the end.

Very to sorry to hear of your friend's terrible loss ... but she did right by Max. Thanks for posting about his special personality and for providing the picture. He was a beautiful dog. R.I.P. Max
