The dog I might get is about 20lbs and I'm not sure which food would be best for him. We bought Wellness Core but now I'm wondering if we should take it back and get the small breed adult formula. He is about 2 years old.

Any suggestions? Is the Core too much for him since he's only 20lbs and he's not terribly active I don't think. I keep hearing different things about high protein in food. Everything seems to be a bit less in the small breed formula and it's for dogs up to 25lbs. What do you think?

Or do you suggest another brand?

There is so much out there and it's terribly confusing :p

"Small breed" other than the kibble size being smaller, I feel is really just a marketing ploy.

Core - of the grain free kibbles, is NOT high protein. Your dog should do fine on it, but why don't you try it out and let HIM tell you if it works or not ;) (Watch stool, body condition, energy level, etc. etc.)

Yeah, I see what you mean. I figured it's different in that the levels of everything are a bit lower.

That's good advice though, I'll try it out and I can always change it if it doesn't work out :) Thank you!

They aren't really high in protein.. the others are very low.

A basic raw diet is HIGHER than the grain free kibbles (if you compare dry weights)

All my dogs get raw. I know many small breed people who feed raw so its higher than those kibbles. IMO small breed dogs do better with higher fat and protein as they tend to have higher metabolism.

Ahh I see. Thank you for explaining that. I keep reading so many different things and it's getting confusing.

I feel better about giving it to him now :)

I use the small breed that wellness makes (i have a picky pom)

This food looks and smells like CAT kibble.

My impression is it is a very rich food.

I used it as training treats once and my 45lb dog (who had maybe ten of these tiny kibbles) had an upset stomach from it.

Its also cheaper than core (at least were iam)
