Weird Eating Habit

Roy , a 9-month male GSD, doesn't eat his food if I give it to him in his bowl. If I give him the same kibble in his kong, he devours it. I am feeding Royal Canin. Of course his kong doesn't hold the full amount so I have to refill it several times. Any ideas why he's doing this ?

He's succeeded in training a human.....you. LOL. If you want him to eat out of a bowl, put his food in a bowl and leave it for him for 15 minutes. Then put it away until the next scheduled feeding time. Don't cave and give into him. He'll learn to eat when the food is available. When he gets hungry enough, he'll eat. Don't worry about him. If he were a Chihuahua, that's another story because they're prone to hypoglycemia, but for your dog....he'll be fine.

I know a few who feed out of a kong, they like the fact that it keeps the dog busy, and I know you can get different sizes, if you are ok with it then doont change but if you want changes then follow Doberluv advice

LOL .... that's a good one Doberluv. I had to do it otherwise he wouldn't have taken his medication. He has to get mixed it in his food. But why think of it now ? I have had for 7 months. If that's the case I'd better watch out

off topic a bit but is he on tablets or powder? becasue if you are worried there are other ways of making sure he gets his meds

well thats good much eaiser for you lol, i have herd of little treats made just to put tablets in, personally if I am giving powder I mix it with some meat or fish and its gone in seconds so i know its all been eaten

That's what I did this morning. I mixed it with the soft food he loves and it was gone. I then gave him his breakfast, just dry kibble, he just sat there looking at it. I guess expecting the kong. I did like Doberluv suggested and left him with the food for 20 min. At first he didn't even get near it and then it,too, was gone.

Maybe you can feed him his kibble first (or give him his 20 minute opportunity) and then when he's finished with that, give him his treat with the medicine in it. Giving the good stuff first is probably tending to make him turn up his nose at the kibble. LOL. Anything he loves will help get the meds down.

My dogs do the same thing though. Sometimes I give them something good on their food and sometimes I don't. When I don't, they stand there and look at me and then the bowl, like, "hey.....what gives? Where's the good stuff?" LOL. Brats.

With pills, I've always stuck a blob of peanut butter on my finger with the pill hidden inside and the dog licks and licks and keeps on licking the roof of his mouth and never notices the pill go down. LOL. They're such a kick.

yes i would give the meds after the food, but it was good that he ate it all good boy
