But there are a lot of people who take wedding etiquette very seriously and will always be offended.

You're not kidding! My MIL & SIL were so angry that we sent out the invites and return envelopes with labels instead of handwriting them. My hubby got screamed at about it. They meant well, and I love them for it. But, this still boggles my mind because...who cares? Lol. So, we handwrote our thank you notes.

Anyway, I would ask the Bride if it is ok. We said 'and guest' on ours if we didn't know the significant other's name (spouses we knew, but we left it open for people that were single or were just dating). We were allowing room for that extra person, we didn't care who it was. But we were laid back about it.
