Vibes and hugs we're in the same boat.
my dog was diagnosed with the same thing today(also a 12 year old) but the vet told us it's not safe to operate her because she is also suffering from kidney failure... gah. They're just putting her on antibiotics and seeing how she reacts.

Is it open or closed?

I'm not sure, the vet didn't tells us, she was more concerned about her kidneys..... But my girl wasn't releasing anything from her vagina and the blood levels weren't high. She said it had to be over 50 it was dangerous, her blood cells count were lower than 50. So i'm hoping it was open *sigh*
