Hi everyone!

I'm very jealous of all of you who have a dog - the pictures posted are way too cute! We are gone a lot on the weekends because both my daughters play softball, so I have been uncomfortable about getting a dog. This year, however, most of the fields we've played at allow you to bring your dog, and I am getting antsy to get a puppy! I'm a lover of big dogs - labs and retrievers - but know the bigger the dog, the more work. My daughters are 11and 14, and let's face it, I have to make up in my mind that I'm going to be the main caregiver - no matter what they say! I just think every kid should grow up with a dog, but until now, haven't wanted to add another chore to my list. I work at home, and as I said, am moving toward looking for a puppy. Having a dog will force me to exercise more too, another good thing. Need to visit the pound soon.

Welcome to the forum. Puppies are definitely a LOT of work. Have you thought about maybe getting an older dog? If you are worried about not being home enough on the weekends, maybe that would be a good option for you.

Hi Sandi...welcome to Chaz!!! It's great that you're willing to adopt a dog from a shelter who needs a home!! I also would suggest maybe thinking about a little older dog, and maybe avoid some of those puppy issues. Which ever way you decide to go, we'll be more then happy to help you out when you need.

What type of work do you do at home. I'm thinking of making a career change so that I can work from home.:)

Hi and welcome to Chazhound! I also think an older dog (maybe one or two years old) would be a better choice so you don't have to worry about house breaking, chewing and constantly walking him. I also love big dogs and look forward to you getting a dog. I hope you enjoy the forum and learn all you need to successfully raise a good dog.

Hi and welcome to Chazhound! :)
I also agree an older dog would probably suit you better than a puppy.

Welcome to Chaz !!! Hey large dogs can be easier to raise that small dogs. I've had Goldens for 60 years , and when I lost my last in July , I found my Ollie on petfinder. Not pure bred but mostly a Golden love !! All my Goldens went to kid's sport activities . Let us know !!!!

:p Hello & welcome to the forum. When you go to the pound, take your daughters & sit with the dogs you like & see which one likes you too.
Things have improved now, when we got a shelter dog 24 yrs ago, we picked him out, did the paperwork & took him home. Now you can spend time with them & take them for a walk. Look forward to hearing all about your new dog.
Good luck.
