I really don't find the actual cost of the titer to be that expensive. It's the cost of shipping blood overnight that gets me! I wish IDEXX was more well respected for their Rabies titer, because clinics using them don't have to charge the client extra to ship it!

When I was at the clinic I remember seeing an ad or something for an in-house titre check. I wonder if it's gotten very far or if it's accurate.

Maybe it was this? I can't remember for sure http://vaccicheck.com/

I got super annoyed at my vet recently...I brought Romeo in for a DHLPP jab, the first time in maybe like four years. She did it and then said he would have to come in again, in 3-4 weeks, to get it boostered again because it had been too long.

I finished up Fiona's series too, she's had four DHLPP jabs-Two at the breeder, one at like 13-14 weeks, and then one just under 6 months with her rabies jab. Vet says oh, since you didn't vaccinate right at 16 weeks, she's going to need ANOTHER booster. Uhh..I don't think so. Maybe if this was a parvo riddled urban area, but there is not much of that around here, at all.

So I let them make the appointment for the boosters, then called and cancelled. So then I went and grabbed their vaccination records for something, I have a paper copy and also an account online to view them, it does not give the date last vaccinated, ONLY that it is due on 2/14/14 (because she wanted me to booster both). So annoyed.

This thread makes me love my vet so much. I will miss him when we move. He pushes NOTHING on me, and they put in the longest possible date for vax that they can.

Thanks for the advice everyone!

I like the new vet we have for the cats, and that's where I plan on taking Jaeger. They seem to listen pretty well and give thorough check ups.

Just to be clear - I do keep up with the rabies vaccines, per the law, it's the parvo, bortadella, lyme, and distemper I get concerned with over vaccinating - especially since we use flea and tick preventatives, and i check him thoroughly any time we've been in long grass or the woods. He is not boarded, and doesn't attend doggy daycare anymore, and we're not in a high-parvo area.

I'll make it a point to take him in yearly check ups. It's just annoying when they charge an arm and a leg to weigh him, look in his ears and at his teeth, and then go "yup, he looks happy and healthy. Keep up whatever you're doing. Oh by the way, shell out even more for all these vaccines he doesn't really need or you're a bad dog mom."

It establishes a good baseline though and gets your vet familiar with what is normal for your pet when they're healthy. I always thought it was kind of a dumb concept until I started working at a clinic lol, and now I've actually seen the thought process when a vet goes "hey, this is something I've never noticed on Fido before." It's kind of silly but there are times where we find things that the owner's haven't even noticed, just because we have the notes and the memory to realize that xyz wasn't present a year ago.

I brought Happy in once and the vet noted that she was tense when her abdomen was palpated, and screamed when her temperature was taken - 2 things that don't really sound abnormal, yet we knew from previous exams that the behavior was abnormal for Happy. And then she ended up having explosive liquid diarrhea for the next day or 2, which explains the discomfort :p

Don't mean to get all soapbox-y lol sometimes I have a hard time leaving my job at work.

And, as far as bad dog moms go, I don't vaccinate for even rabies. So I'm pretty much the worst.
